I was injected

Cirith Ungol Webpit was hacked and injection (zip) with at least "Team neonorv", "BananaXTn" and "lagoon_tri" in September 2020. But this was amateurish, not really secure.

Edit: I now have my backup, but it will be more secured. Later.

Hi,

I got this vinyl from Liquid Flame Records, but the year is 1981 (HM13666)!?

Cossack

- Cossack, 2010-07-19 18:27:05

You are perhaps right. It was recorded December 1980. Released on Enigma Records 31 Jan 1981. Released on Liquid Flame Records somewhere between that. Have read both years multiple places though. HM13666, isn't that the catalogue number for the Enigma edition?

- Dani, 2010-07-19 20:03:03

I don’t find any mention of Enigma, only Liquid Flame Records... There’s a mailing list as well (to "fill out and return to be placed on Cirith Ungol’s International List") with adress:
Liquid Flames Productions
349N. Aliso, Suite A
Ventura, CA, U.S.A. 93001

Maybe it’s reissue...?

- Cossack, 2010-07-21 12:55:21

Wikipedia sais:

Originally released by Cirith Ungol on Liquid Flames Records in 1980, the album was re-released in 1981 by Enigma Records

Metal-Archives also sais 1980.

I dunno, 1981 is probably corrects since thats what is written on your LP.

- Dani, 2010-07-22 01:39:38

Yes, I read  it too... But it doesn't matter - 80 or 81 - it's great album and that's important!

Thanx and cheers

- Cossack, 2010-07-22 16:35:22

A runoff matrix is the # on the vinyl next to the label. If you hold the vinyl at the right angle in the light you can see it impressed or etched into the run off at the end of each side. this is where the HM13666 number comes from. So an LF001 is an HM13666. Liquid Flame is Cirith Ungol's label, they created it so they could put there LP out. The Liquid Flame LF001 is their self release. The only other album you'll find released on Liquid Flame records is Falcon S/T CD, this is because Rob Garven is the drummer for Falcon.

Excellent album! Excellent band! Perry, Greg and Darrin have created a hard rock classic for the ages. Perry is a well seasoned pro guitarist that pulls off more hooks than a deep sea fishing boat. The elements of Cirith Ungol are present along with the Thin Lizzy and Mountain influences. Great stuff, give it a listen. The double leads in Elfland's Daughter is worth the cost of the disc alone! Possibly the most thoughtful lyrics since early Blue Oyster Cult who I always considered the thinking man's metal band. Greg Lindstrom, the master on the bass, so good it's scary. Check out the first Falcon album as well, it's also a 9 out of 10.

I finally got hold of this bootleg. It's being sold on eBay once in a while, so it should be available to anyone who wants it. It will probably be a little overpriced though. Anything between $25-65 could be expected. There's no need to pay more than that, as it most probably will be listed again soon enough! The CD consists of two parts; Live at Roxy Club 1983 (track 1-7) and Live in Santa Barbara (track 8-12). The cover artwork of Elric is great of course, the booklet is quite good too. It has words by Rob and Greg, and a lot of pics inside.

The real attraction here is the first part, Live at Roxy Club 1983, where most of the King of the Dead album is played. Three of the songs has never officially been released live before, that is Black Machine, Death of the Sun and Finger of Scorn. The soundquality is unfortunately not great. The highlight for me here is Finger of Scorn, which is presented in a quite different version from the album version. The accoustic intro and interlude is different, and Tim doesn't "scream" as much, but sings in a much softer style, which serves this semi-ballad well.

The songs of the second part, Live In Santa Barbara, have already officially been released on Servants of Chaos in 2001. They were recorded 1984/85. The sound quality here is very good.

- Dani, 2010-04-22 01:40:20
I got it aswell, great stuff indeed! Just saw that the seller put this one up recently, might be worth checking out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320571140198&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_1131wt_1137
- Marcus, 2010-08-05 16:27:00

Please guys do NOT support bootlegers, those are lost money gone to some wise guy that released this!

I have this live recordings in my possession for many years but never thought to make a cover with Elric and release a bootleg cd!

If the band wanted it, they would have done so and make a profit out of it!

Having these songs in your p.c is one thing and release them as a bootleg cd is another.

Please stop buing bottlegs!

With all do respect

Ioannis

- Ioannis Katis, 2010-08-06 18:49:20

Thanks for the tip, Marcus.

I know that many people with good reasons are against bootlegs and I fully respect their views. Personally I have been buying bootlegs the last 15 years or so, mostly bootlegs with rare tracks. Bootlegs are often the only way to get the stuff - at least 15 years ago. CU them self doesn't seem to have very much against bootlegs either. See Rob's words in the Diabolical Conquest interview, + Tim shared a link where one could download a CU bootleg.
There are different types of bootlegs.

Counterfeits are good replacements when the original record is impossible to find without being Sherlock Holmes and Bill Gates at the same time. I prefer having a bootleg of the CD/LP than not having it at all, or just on mp3.

Bootlegs with unreleased live recordings or songs are very interesting for me if I already have all what has been officially released. I may be wrong, but I don't know if it's true that if the band would like to release their live recordings officially, they would just do it. CU has wanted to release a live album since 1986. (see the Suck City interview). It much depends on the record companies. I also don't think that a crappy bootleg would stop the fans from buying an awesome official live album with superb quality.

Just my opinion...

- Dani, 2010-08-08 04:10:18
I couldnt have said it better dani! I totally agree that bootleggs are a integrated part of particularly the Underground metal scene, where Demos, rehearshals, Hard to get live recordings etc are only available to fans or collectors through bootleggs (or in some rare cases via download) Bootlegging has been going on since more or less "the birth of rock" some 30-40 years ago and really came alive in the 70´s with the whole record collecting thing, which later wore of on the metal community and those collectors. Totally agree with dani on this. Just my opinion aswell...

I just got this from eBay. It is a bootleg album recorded live at the Country Club, Resada, 14 Oct 1983. The sound quality is decent and there's a pause of silence between each track. The booklet has some liner notes written by The Battle Axe Team. It is stated that it is a "Fan produced bootlegg recording 1983". The CD is as expected a CD-R, like all other bootlegs by Battle Axe. Fans who read the tracklist will get excited to find out about a song listed as "Bastard". This song is sadly just Master of the Pit. I don't know why they chose to call it Bastard, either it was actually called Bastard before it was renamed to Master of the Pit on the album, or they called it to draw attention and sell more CD's. Either way it really sounds like Tim could be saying "this song is called... Bastard" at the beginning of the song, but I'm unable to hear it properly. This CD is not a must, but a nice item for die-hard fans. Best version after one spin: I'm Alive.

The band members need to jump on this ASAP. Even if it's something like a fan funded official live release. They must have some soundboards tapes that would be worth releasing themselves for the fans, that way they beat the bootleggers at their own game. I know I would be glad to pay between $15.00 & $25.00 for an official bootleggs series from the band themselves. Many bands have gone the route of asking the fans to pay up front to cover the production of the Cd's themselves. Just a thought. I'd love to have copies of these boots but I will not pay some dirt bag making money off of a band that could use the money for THEIR art. Oh yeah and limited to 100 copies my ass! How many editions of 100 copies will they end up pressing in the long run? The band members are the only ones who have the right to sell their recordings. Bootlegs should be traded for free or not at all!!!!!

The most commercial song on this album but I think it's well placed between lots of heavy stuff.  It's a solid fast rockin tune and I like it a lot.

A Little Fire - Live
I just received some really cool news that needs to be shared with all Ungolfans out there!
Californian cult metal legends CIRITH UNGOL will release their new live album, "A Little Fire - Live" in December 2010 via Liquid Flame Records. The first live album ever by these metal veterans, will have the classic line-up from Frost and Fire, that is Baker, Lindstrom, Fogle, Flint and Garven. All tracks were recorded between 1979 and '82. As a bonus, it will have two additional, previously unreleased tracks taken from the recording sessions for the unfinished, fifth album. The cover artwork was created by Michael Whelan for the Elric novels.

That will make a great christmas present! Please note that the cover shown here will not necessarily reflect the final work. Read more about a possible Live-album here (information from before this live album was announced).

A new Falcon song has been released! Well, the song is not exactly new. It was written already in 1976 by Greg Lindstrom and is actually a unreleased Cirith Ungol-song! Falcon re-recorded this in 2004, but it remained unreleased until today. Read more about the original Cirith Ungol song here and Falcon's re-recording here. The song is called Bad Scene and is available on the Falcon fanpage on facebook, but you don't need a facebook account to hear it. Any kind of new music by these guys would be welcome by me.  I rather dislike the metal without melody that's been passed around since 1990.  I'm old school but probably younger than old Sabbath or BOC fans.

Cirith Ungol is my all time favorite band and I'm not just saying that because I love Moorcock.  The creativity and originality of their work is second to none in my opinion.

My only complaint is that we were too young by the time we recorded this version. The whole demo was recorded in less than 20 hours, the sound sucks pretty bad, and I personally think I was not skilled enough when doin' that. But it's still awesome to be part of the first CU tribute ever made!

CIRITH UNGOL launch landing page for the release of their “Servants of Chaos” double cd+dvd Digipak/3-Gatefold LP!
Ventura, CA's CIRITH UNGOL, one of the most underrated bands from the early 80s metal scene, released four albums between 1980 and 1991. CIRITH UNGOL´scatalogue is being celebrated through the release of a collection of rare and live tracks on the 2 CD/1 DVD double digipak album, Servants of Chaos. Servants was originally released exclusively in Europe back in 2001 and a DVD has been added to augment the already stellar collection of music. The DVD contains an entire, rarely seen live show, shot on November 9th, 1984 at the storied, and now defunct, Wolf & Rissmiller's Country Club in Reseda, CA. The CD/DVD Digipak and triple vinyl will be available on November 18th/21st, 2011.

The name CIRITH UNGOL is pronounced "kirith ungol" and is an Elvish phrase meaning "pass of the spider", which is something that Lord of the Rings fans will surely recognize. The name is, of course, indicative of the band's fantasy-oriented lyrics, themes and beautiful album artwork.

This live-DVD is the first live relic ever to be released by CIRITH UNGOL!

Comments Robert Garven jr.: “This amateur video was never meant to be released. The audio was taken off the mixing console. As we were an opening act, we had little or no sound check, room on stage, and restricted access to the lighting and sound. Even though, this rare and primitive video is one of the few ever taken of the band!”

Cirith Ungol live in Greece Yes, a Cirith Ungol song was played live by Dexter Ward at the Up The Hammers Festival in Greece last week. Dexter Ward is a quite new band formed last year that features two former members of Battleroar. The cover they played was Go It Alone from the Paradise Lost album. It was performed at the warmup show 04 Mar 2010.

Update 22 Mar 2010: Comments by the band below!

Its
one of our favourite band of all times. I speak with Greg and Robert
from time to time trying to convice them to play at Up
the Hammers festival something that can't work. We chosen the song for
many reasons. One of them  and the most important is that we love the
song as every Cirith Ungol song ever written. The song has also a
lyrical theme that is what me and Marco wanted to express after our
departure from battleroar. We were born with a 6 string in our hands and
we'll go it alone hehe.

-Manolis
"Barraza" Karazeris (guitarist and organizer of the festival), 19 Mar 2010

We had been wanting to play a Cirith Ungol cover for quite a long time,
and although it's indeed an anusual choice we found out "Go It Alone"
was the right one for us, for many different reasons. Our guitar player
Akis loves it for its Van Halen feel, and the vocal melodies used by Tim
Baker on this one are more "standard" and less complex to pull out for
me compared to what he does on most of the other Cirith
Ungol songs. Since it is an up tempo rocker with a big chorus it worked
well live and certain parts of the lyrics reflect exactly what we are
now doing, being back with Dexter Ward. I also have to say I liked this
song from the first time I listened to Paradise Lost.  The six strings
in my hand thing, some might call it clichè, I call it the rock and roll
way and fighting for your dreams ... can you get more pure and more
honest than this, and most of all, more american? We are reaching our
middle 30s now but for us this dream is more alive than ever.

-Marco Concoreggi (vocalist), 22 Mar 2010

Great coversong! Probably my least favourite song from Paradise Lost, but it seems it works out much better live than on the flat studioversion. Enjoyable feelgood song! Smile

(R.I.P.) wird Perry Grayson (FALCON, ex-HELSTAR) übernehmen.

UPDATE 03 APR 2011
This was of course just an 1st April fool as confirmed by Perry Grayson. Copied from some German metal forums. Btw, Perry didn't play in Helstar, but in Destiny's End.

Love this band! This better not be a joke! The legion has been awaiting this news for ages. What about Jim though?

- Kevin Gibbs, 2011-04-01 21:04:04

Convixion - I'm Alive Here is a live cover of Cirith Ungol's I'm Alive by the Greece metal band Convixion. It was recorded in Kyttaro, Athens, Greece on 20 Dec 2010.
Unfortunately the sound quality is not great and the beginning is missing. If you know of a better version, please comment or contact!

UPDATE 22 Dec 2010: Comments from the band under the video!

A short interview with Nick Papakostas, guitars and vocals, 22 Dec 2010

What are your relations to Cirith Ungol?- We do not have any personal relations to Cirith Ungol. We are just huge huge huge fans of their music.

Why
did you choose to cover Cirith Ungol? - We used to jam some Cirith
Ungol songs during our rehearsals. We played at Larissa city some weeks
ago and we thought to give it a try. We played "Black Machine" and it
went really well. Everyone's comment were very encouraging.

And why exactly I'm Alive?- Because
it is one of the best songs ever written and one of our favorites. He
hadn't told anyone that we were going to cover I'm Alive. It was a big
surprise for all.
You
do not have to know the story behind the lyrics. Each one of us had in
his life one, two or many dark times... This song reflects our feelings
in times like these. It gives us a way to express emotions. But the true
power of the song is in the end. The last two lines are the ones that
give you strenght to hold  and move on... Great great great song. Fully
emotional...
Will this cover be released on any record? It wasn't recorded. Only what you saw on youtube, so no!
Any plans for a studio cover version? Not
for the moment! I think that a song like this cannot be re-recorded. It
might lose its originality. The production of "Frost and Fire" is one
of the elements that makes it so magical (even though for many people it
isn't "good")
Nick and Convixion

Comments by Nick Papakostas of Convixion added! Cool

Great cover IMO, Papakostas, the singer, looks and sounds very passionate. Would be nice to hear more Ungol covers from these guys.

- Dani, 2010-12-23 04:36:14

Falcon updates (Apr 2012) Greg Lindstrom, Darin McCloskey and I [Perry] gathered in L.A. in late November to work on songs for the third full-length album. We recorded basic tracks for three demos, and I'll be overdubbing vocals and lead guitar soon. We're excited about the new tunes, and hope to convene Stateside later in the year to record the real deal.

Today we received the digital preview of the gatefold for the DIE WONTCHA LP from Svart. After a few changes it should be good to go! Once we get the inner sleeve (lyrics, liners, thanks, etc.), we'll have a few more changes to make. We're really looking forward to this puppy finally being released on wax! More news to come soon...

- Epitaph, 2010-03-02 14:07:21

this is probably my fave Ungol song ever. It really brings me to tears, it's an incredible depiction of mankind's greatest fears, yet it's charming and beautiful. Jerry's solo is something beyond human, the arpeggios are mindblowing. What a song.

Other news:
One Foot In Hell has been ranked at place 17 on best Metal Blade Records albums of all time.

To commemorate the fine 30th Anniversary of metal’s most venerable and storied label, Metal Blade Records, the writers of BraveWords.com have gotten their metalheads together and come up with a list of the Top 30 coolest, most legendary, rockingest, most influential, most deserving of fame and notoriety, releases founder/CEO Brian Slagel and crew have issued since forging the fire way back in mom’s garage in 1982. As has become tradition ‘round here, we are presenting them – through January and February – in reverse order, leading eventually to the penultimate slab of iron ever to carry an esteemed Metal Blade catalogue number.

By Greg Pratt

Man, history has not been kind to Californian heavy metallers CIRITH UNGOL—NO ONE has been kind to Cirith Ungol—but take a listen to One Foot In Hell to get a glimpse of a truly unique band. Cool to see them place on this list at all, those histrionic vocals, the overdramatic songwriting, and general metal-’til-fucking-death being a bit too OTT for even some diehard metal types, the band toiling, toiling, toiling, silent, forgotten, back again for quick reunion, underwhelming, silent, forgotten… but for brief moments of time way back when—like during One Foot In Hell’s duration—Cirith Ungol were doing everything perfectly.

Go It Alone in Athens A new version of Dexter Ward's cover was played live at Gagarin, 28 Oct 2010. Dexter Ward previously covered Cirith Ungol's Go it Alone in 04 Mar 2010 at the Up the Hammers Festival. That version was released on vinyl.

Its
one of our favourite band of all times.

-Manolis
"Barraza" Karazeris (guitarist), 19 Mar 2010

Mediocre! The singer sucks and doesen't stand a chance, the main solo of the song mysteriously vanished, and the atmosphere, even if this is the most catchy song of paradise lost and not so atmospheric, here it sounds like a childish junior high school party.Sorry guys even if i'm used to Cirith Ungol crap cover versions having heard (ohh my God...) one foot in fire, i'm allways pissed off when someone tries to reach out and touch the masters of the pit.Go cover wotan or doomsword,i don't give a shit, but when it comes to C.U. i seriously do give a shit. Not only every attempt turns out lame, but a serious sacrilege too!So go it alone if you like, but save us from your lonesome...!

- Ioannis Katis, 2010-11-15 00:12:11

hmm.. I see it more as a fun hymn/tribute to one of their favourite bands, not as an attempt to outperform Cirith Ungol.

I`m a chilean obssessed CIRITH UNGOL maniac, well; there are plenty of this stuff that deserves more attention from younger musicians like me and almost anybody (I`m 22 years old), and discovered servants of chaos on some virtual shop from my town, the last and only unit that nobody wants will be mine. King Of The Dead blew me away in a way very few albums of this kind could. Its crazy because there`s a very sad story behind all the magic and uniqueness of this band, and all that facts made a huge impression and made me also decide to devote my life entirely to music, I live almost alone with very few people that cannot be baptized as friends, altrhough I composed some death metal stuff; actually I`m a huge fan of 70`s rock and roll.
Cirith Ungol made me decide to dedicate my entire life to the guitar since I first listened their band`s name song. and that will never change. cheers.

Horror Records Not quite new, but I accidently just discovered this 7" vinyl single by Italian doom metal band Black Oath. Released on Horror Records, 2010. The cover is quite interesting as it's undeniable a Cirith Ungol-tribute. But the band don't make any mention of Ungol at their website at all as far as I can see. I don't own the record so I can't tell whether they're mentioned anywhere in the sleeve notes.

Thanks Rob. Jerry's death so long ago, i just discovered recently that news. Thats for that post Rob. I post quite a bit on really obscure sites in the hope they are read or discovered. I will most definely continue to contribute. The Cirith Ungol webpit allows this. Cirith Ungol band members and loyal fans have shouldered and kept Cirith Ungol alive. Jerry is still with the band except in a different way.

- Rayzor Cardona, 2010-03-01 22:08:36

Sad. Not only that Jerry died, but also the fact that he was so depressed because of the band not receiving the credit and recognition they deserved.

Cirith Ungol was definitely one of the finest metal bands ever, and the fact that they still have a huge fan base is the best proof.

- Fer, 2010-10-15 15:31:16

If the world we live in was ruled by justice and logic and if music world was ruled by music lovers and not by money-hungry sharks, Jerry would now be a guitar-icon like Eddy Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix or Yngwie Malmsteen. I'm talking as a guitar player and as a fan, he had a true unique style. His use of a raw alternate picking mixed with arpeggios and dream-like melodies still amazes me. The double leads he created on "Cirith Ungol" and "Nadsokor" are some of the best things I've ever heard from a six string... Rest in peace Jerry, I really want to think my love for your music can reach you, wherever you are.

- Guido - Axevyper, 2010-11-17 04:52:32

Cirith Ungol was a great band, and Jerry a talented and awesome guitar player!! I remember back 1987 when my brother and I bought the album King Of The Dead. Was love at first listen. That review is way too harsh. Frown

Pretty Spinal Tap, actually. Xavier should've said "Shit sandwich." It would've made him that much more credible.

Different strokes for different folks, but I think Frost and Fire and King of the Dead are landmark heavy metal albums!

- Perry, 2010-06-15 10:37:20

As it is said, journalists didn't know what to make of the uniqueness of Ungol, and what to compare them to. Guess it's the same story for Manilla Road. They had really bad reviews when their 80's album were new, but now over 20 years later they all are praised and considered classics. Frost and King are indeed landmark HM albums.

Btw, what's that flag you got?

Celtic Frost isn`t a name from Cirith Ungol !

Interview with "Tom G. Warrior" :

I've always wondered where exactly the name Celtic Frost came from? I've read a few ideas on it but what is it's real meaning?

"It's very typical Martin and me. We just couldn't do it like any other band, we had to be different. We didn't want to have a metal clich? name. we wanted to have a synonym for the apocalypse. So we chose "Celtic" as representative of human civilizations and we used "Frost" as a sign of decay, of death, of standstill, when everything freezes and dies. We took the name "Frost" especially because after the winter, after the frost, there is always a new spring and life blossoms again and to us it reflected very much the coming and going of the different civilizations on this planet."

One thing I've wondered...I've heard the band name pronounced "Keltic Frost" I guess like from Ireland derivative of the Celts? And I've also heard people pronounce it like "Seltic Frost." Maybe you can set the record straight and tell us how it is supposed to be pronounced.

"The official way, the correct way, is "Keltic." That's how the band was formed too. However, you guys in North America, 90% of you guys call it "Seltic." Since Reed was in the band and Martin is a double citizen (he's American too), this "Seltic" thing crept into the band and half the time we ourselves said "Seltic" and half the time we said "Keltic." We caught ourselves, we tried to say "Keltic" but it's so hard when you have your main market in America, it just slips in."

Greetings !

- Carsten Freckmann, 2012-07-11 14:22:54

Would be awesome to hear the song with vocals! Perry told me has the demo with bass, drums and vocals, but it's up to him (Greg) to release it as some point.

Yeah, just as cool as I expected, but fuck I am shocked at the comment directed toward Greg Lindstrom.....the man's a genius!

- Angelo Tringali, 2010-04-11 00:00:00

I'm not at all surprised that Rob said that. You simply have to understand that he spoke those words nearly 25 years ago, just after Greg left the band. Rob did and does feel that Frost & Fire is the most commercial thing CU did. Rob and Greg are still friends, and that stuff is all way under the bridge. Time passes and people realize they said things before they thought them out. They grow up! (Rob was in the process of getting over it even several months later in his HM Times interview.) Rob also said in Heavy Metal Times that "I feel that Greg's music was too introspective..." He hit the nail dead-on as far as why I prefer Frost & Fire over any CU album (although the stuff from Servants of Chaos with Greg on it is also a fave). "Edge of a Knife," "Better Off Dead" and "What Does It Take" speak to the social outsider like few songs I've ever listened to. In my opinion that's a good thing! Fantasy is awesome, but Greg was making some actual commentary on the trials and tribulations of going against the mindless herd, of alienation. ("They all seem different, but they're all the same...") Greg is decidely less into the metal machismo thing than Rob, and I can admire both. If Rob and Tim thought Greg was being "pussy" for writing those tunes at the time, so be it. Greg's lyrics--pun intended--strike more of a chord with me. "I'd put it down to experience / but I haven't had any yet" is a profound line, but obviously it's something Tim probably didn't feel like singing. Perhaps Greg should've stuck to singing it himself! I wouldn't have minded. It's definitely difficult when you're a songwriter/musician in a band and have to rely on a singer to deliver the vocals. I had the same problem...

CU had a backlog of songs from their early years, but they put a lot of Greg's more introspective "commercial" sounding tunes out first. I don't feel it was a bad move. "Frost & Fire" and "I'm Alive" are a bit different. The former is more of a Fritz Leiber (Fafhrd and Gray Mouser) homage ("the frost monstreme and the fire divine"), while "I'm Alive" sounds like it could be spoken by Moorcock's Elric himself.

Flint said he "looked up to Greg" and that he saw/heard Greg do things on bass that no one else could. I'll attest to that! As for "radical" and extremely heavy? If you heard the original rehearsal room recording of "One Foot in Hell" or "Cirith Ungol" c. 1976 you'd shit your pants!

Couldn't disagree more with Fowley here. Nadsokor is awesome and with no doubt belongs to the best half of this album.

I'm btw very curious how the original version sounds like. Hope it will be a bonustrack on the new re-release. Rob said about the final album:

"You didn't hear the solo's of Jerry's tat were cut on OFIH or the unbelievable four part background vocals I did on 'Nadsokor' that never made it to the record. I also feel that it was mixed kind of flat."

Yes, indeed! Personally I'd prefer the repress of Servants and the live DVD to be two separate releases, so people who already have the Servants album doesn't need to buy it again.

I've noticed some new auctions by drummer Robert Garven.

Both original members Greg Lindstrom and Robert Garven have been
selling various stuff on eBay for a while including some Cirith Ungol
souvenirs. The latest Cirith Ungol additions are:
A signed photo

"This is a one of a kind Cirith Ungol print made from the original
negative on Kodak paper. It was taken by Greg Hazard, and is 30.5x20". I
think it was taken at the Beverly Theater, in Beverly Hills, CA but not
sure. I was a co-founder and drummer for the band for 21 years. If
desired I will sign and personalize. It should be framed and matted and
is currently rolled up but in excellent shape. Hard times forces sale.
You will never see another one of these  "

A signed Frost and Fire LP

"I was the original dummer and co-founder of Cirith Ungol.
After 9 years together we finally released our first album "Frost &
Fire". This is a VERY RARE opportunity to obtain the original first copy
of this the first album we produced signed by all the original members
except myself. If requested I will sign it also, however these
signatures were made to me and at the time the record was released. This
is especially rare as Jerry our original guitarist  passed away many
years ago signature is here also. Hard time makes me offer the rarest
piece of Cirith Ungol memorabilia and my most important in my
collection. Although I never made any success I am hoping that one of
our fans has been successful and can aquire this once in a lifetime
piece of rock history. We were the first band in LA to release out own
record independently and this was it. The label is even blank! Thanks
for looking. I will answer any questions about this item, and include a
new never opened copy of the same album to whomever buys this one."

One Foot In Hell poster

I was the original and only
drummer and co-founder of the Heavy Metal band Cirith Ungol. There were
posters made for our 3rd album "One Foot in Hell" which was released on
Metal Blade Records in 1986.  They depicted the amazing illustration of
Michael Whelan, which also appeared on the Michael Moorcock book
entitled, "The Vanishing Tower". All of them were folded in quarters and
sent out with the records for in store displays. However a few example
were left unfolded. Here is a perfect example of one of those very rare
posters. It measures 28.5 x 22" and is in PERFECT CONDITION! Hard times
makes me offer the rarest piece of Cirith Ungol memorabilia and my most
of my collection. Although I never had any success I am hoping that some
of our fans has been more successful and can acquire this piece of
memorabilia of rock  and Heavy Metal history. We were the first band in
LA to release out own record independently. Thanks for looking. I will
answer any questions about this item, and sign if requested.

Primordial’s AA Nemtheanga talks classic metal with Brian Slagel: Cirith Ungol
Recently, Brian Slagel and Primordial's AA Nemtheanga had a chance to
talk about some of their favorite classic metal albums from the Metal
Blade vault. The conversation has been broken up into a four part series
to focus on each of the four albums that they discussed. In part 1, the
metal connoisseurs reminisce about Cirith Ungol's King Of The
Dead. Nemtheanga talks about that album's influence on himself
and Primordial while Brian Slagel talks about what it was like to work
with the band back in the early 1980s.

Source: Metal Blade TV

Fuckin' A that's an awesome interview!  I loved it.  I agree, CU's sound has aged much better than the hair and trash bands in the early to mid 80s.

I can hardly listen to anything after Shout at the Devil or Master of Puppets from those genres.

- Kevin Gibbs, 2010-07-02 04:40:33

Yes I thought it was quite cool. Especially since Primordial is a very cool band. Seen them live once at Hole in the Sky fesival. Discovered it by an accident. Curious what the follow-up albums  will be....

section  R.I.P. Frank Frazetta
R.I.P. Frank Frazetta Frank Frazetta (February 9, 1928 – May 10, 2010) was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for work in comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, record-album covers, and other media. Some of the album covers he did was Dust - Hard Attack (1972) and Molly Hatchet - Beatin' the Odds (1980). He didn't paint any of Cirith Ungol's covers, but one of his paintings were supposed to be used on the Frost and Fire LP.

At the time we wanted a "Sword and Sorcery" theme cover called "Berserker" by Frank Frazetta, a famous sword and sorcery artist, but it was taken by the country rock band MOLLY HATCHET!

-Robert Garven

Here is a review by Robert Garven for Dust's self-titled debut album:
These guys were a great band, not sure what happened to Marc Bell's drumming in the Ramone's, but here it is great. I also like their second album [Hard Attack] better but make no mistake these guys rocked. The band I was in was inspired by Frank Frazetta's paintings on Hard Attack and wanted one on our first album, however a country rock band [Molly Hatchet] got the one we wanted entitled "Berserker" and we got "Stormbringer", which has humbled me to this day.

-Robert Garven, 29 Mar 2008

Dust's second album Hard Attack is also on Greg Lindstrom's Top Thirty list.

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

Legendary Heavy Metal Vocalist Ronnie James Dio has unfortunately died of stomach cancer this morning,
16 May 2010.

Ronnie has been in the music scene for over 50 years. His works with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio are mandatory in any metal collection. That being at least Ritchie Blamore's Rainbow, Rising and Long Live Rock n' Roll (Rainbow), Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules (Black Sabbath), Holy Diver and The Last in Line (Dio). Cirith Ungol used to warm up for Dio-era Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath's classic LP "Heaven and Hell", is also on Greg Lindstrom Top Thirty list. If you don't have it already, get your copy of the Deluxe Edition of this album.

Also of interest to Cirith Ungol and Falcon fans should be the Holy Dio tribute album featuring Destiny's End covering The Last in Line, where Perry Grayson plays on.

Read more about this tragic loss at Blabbermouth or Black Sabbath. Also be sure to check out the pics of Dio taken by Greg Hazard, Cirith Ungol's official photograph!.

Dio's the best singer on earth.

-Tim Baker, 1982

Picture below: Ronnie James Dio and Tim Baker.

Rest in peace.

I was expecting this to happen soon, but at the same time unbelievable. Long live rock n' roll, Long live Ronnie James Dio!

Some of my favourite tracks with Dio on vocals:

Black Sabbath - Sign of the Southern Cross.

Dio - All The Fools Sailed Away

Dio - Born on the Sun

Rainbow - Stargazer

Rainbow - Temple of the King

Even if it didn't come unexpected, this is still shocking. A terrible loss for all those with hearts and souls connected to Heavy Metal. He has always been there and has given us all so much. In eternal gratitude: Farewell Ronnie!

Re-releases Re-releases of all albums?

"in negotiations to re-release all the albums-we'll see.."

-Tim Baker, 30 Apr 2010

I have no idea who owns the mastertapes and rights for Paradise Lost. Something has for sure happened the last years, because PL was officially re-released by Noble Rot not long ago. Never heard about Noble Rot before though. I hope they will be able to re-release it anyway. If they re-release them as deluxe editions, it will be a win/win-situation for both the fans (who gets something new) and the band and label (who sells more).

- Dani, 2010-05-20 22:41:50

I really wish the re-releases will be Deluxe Editions and cover all five albums, including Paradise and Servants, and that they will have a big upgrade with big booklets and bonus discs. Just plain repressings are not very interesting, except for Servants which is out of print.

Anyone else who agrees or have special wishes for the re-releases, please demand before it's too late!

- Dani, 2010-05-18 18:00:09

My wishes for the re-releases: Big colour booklets in all albums with liner notes, rare pics, etc.

Frost and Fire
CD1: Frost and Fire original album
CD2&3: Orange Album, Demo 1979 and other old tracks.

King of the Dead
CD1: King of the Dead original album
CD2&3: live shows, out-takes, etc

One Foot in Hell
CD1: One Foot in Hell original album
CD2&3: One Foot in Hell original mix (the band didn't like the final production/mix), + live, out-takes, etc

Paradise Lost
CD1: Paradise Lost original album
CD2: Paradise Lost, original production (the band didn't like the final production), live, out-takes, etc

Servants of Chaos

CD1&2: Servants original album

CD3: more raritites. I'd prefer a DVD to be a separate release.

Who are the ones ending up buying these re-releases? Is it Metal Blade Records? No! So please tell them what you want before they are pressed!

- Dani, 2010-05-18 19:29:45

I have them on CD already except Servants.  I'd buy them all again if they were packaged in the way suggested.  Heck, I'd buy Servants if it were simply made available again for a reasonable price.

Does the band have the original masters?  They probably don't in the case of all releases as I think they signed away all rights to Paradise at least.

If they can get them then perhaps they could re-master them the way they see fit but that's gonna cost coin.

Personally, I think they all sound pretty good and I've grown crotchety in my old age so change isn't always for the better IMO, especially if the added touches don't exist.  I think there were some quotes about the best takes of Tim's vocals being actually trashed on the floor in the Paradise sessions.  If those best takes don't exist anymore then I say let sleeping dogs lie.

Now, that isn't to say I wouldn't buy any re-release as long as I know the artists themselves receive just compensation.  The fellas in this band were way more creative than most bands and they deserve something more than an attaboy for that.

I'm just a fan though and I know that building a fan base is difficult so like I said I'd buy Servants if it were re-released but I'm not sticking money in anyone's bread jar unless the band sees some of that.

- Kevin Gibbs, 2010-05-18 19:45:19

It would be very exciting to find out the entire Cirith Ungol back catalog was going to be re-released as deluxe edition Cd's with bonus material included. Each should come with an up-dated booklet with rare photos and liner notes from the band members.

It's an absolute crime for these brilliant recordings to remain out of print. These incredible musicians were robbed by the very industry they dreamed would help elevate them to fame and fortune the first time around. Lets give this incredible band what it deserves by releasing these incredible recordings with all the grandeur they rightfully deserve. There is a whole new generation of heavy music fans that need to hear the majesty that is/was the mighty Cirith Ungol.

Trengert of Metal Blade in Germany. The double album was only released in Europe, and not in USA. Ask Brian Slagel and Metal Blade in USA why they did not release it in the US!

If you know of any better or worse prices, please contact!

The norwegian record dealer www.platekompaniet.no sells this for 179 NOK, about US $30. I don't know whether they send outside of Norway.

It seems this is another box set than the other which is supposed to contain all Metal Blade studio albums and/or unreleased tracks. Keeping my finger crossed that both will eventually see the light of day.
I'll update this post as soon as I have any additional info.

You can get it here.

I just got my copy and I have to let everyone know, if you are a fan, you must, I repeat, must, own this.  It is an awesome show.  Mr Garver mentions in his comments that the band had limited access to lighting and soundcheck, and you can see this, but you can also see what an awesome band Cirith Ungol is live.  I say is, because to me, they are still the Kings of the Pit!!!

Some news about the upcoming album Well, not really. Just some random stuff.King of the Dead - 2 Disc BoxsetAt least four different sellers at eBay, Moviemars and perhaps from others places, are selling a new CD titled King of the Dead 2 disc/box set. I tried to contact all four of them to ask about the item. None of them was able to help! So at the cheap price, I ordered one and found out it is just King of the Dead, no extras at all.

The Shit List: Top 25 Worst Band Names EVER!
What is sais about Cirith Ungol:
I remember seeing an album by this band in a mail-order ad stuck in the
back of some rock & roll magazine when I was a kid. The name stuck
with me because, at the time, I thought it was the perfect name for a
metal band that wanted to spend the rest of their career in absolute
obscurity. The name Cirith Ungol is taken from Tolkien's "The
Lord Of The Rings", as the band members were heavy into the "Swords
& Sorcery" stuff as kids, but now admit that maybe they'd have been
better off coming up with a different name. D'oh!

Tribute videoI just stumpled across this fairly new Cirith Ungol tribute video. It's an instrumental medley of Ungol songs with a slideshow of a rather odd choice of pictures. Some of them doesn't really belong there IMO, but judge for yourself!

I'm impressed! You've manaegd the almost impossible.

SpiritBell - Frost and Fire A new cover version of Frost and Fire by Hungarian metal band SpiritBell.

UPDATE 22 Jun 2011: Comments by the band below.

SpiritBell was made by Patak ’Pixi’ Sándor (vocals, lyrics) and Zoltán Márkó (guitar, bass) at the end of year 2010, after secession from the band Aiming High (Accept/Iron Maiden tribute). Previously we made only covers , but we would have play our own songs, so we’d started a new project. At first we’d working with digital drum lines, but after some months we said: „We need a real drummer!” Then we found Ákos Heil, a young and talented drummer (from the band Verona). We made some records as trio with Zoli’s home studio apparel, but the quality is not so bad – in contempt of circumstances. This first material is including all the things which we like, all the music influences of the bands and artists who we hold in high esteem. Naturally we’d like to make live shows too, our either aim is to have a fix concert band and to play at utmost places in the near future( hope we found a bassist, we have a name nowJ). So we are working on our first album, and ’till our own songs will be finished, we make some covers in the studio(Cirith Ungol, Accept, Tormentor and many more…). Why? Naturally because we like theese great bands and we are fans of them! And Frost And Fire is one of the best old school metal songs, we love it! Maybe this cover will be released on CD, but only in that case if it’s not problem to Cirith Ungol menbers… We don’t have a label currently, we don’t have money, we are just a little metal band from Hungary, but we are true in our hearts and we make everything what we can for our beloved music.

-Patak ’Pixi’ Sándor, Zoltán Márkó, Ákos Heil (SpiritBell), 22 Jun 2011

Huuuu, Go on Guys, Goooooo on! You're Great!!!!!! :D

- Sz. Lejla, 2011-06-22 17:27:29

Hi! Hope our first album is coming soon, but at first: we need a record label...But we're working on the last 3 songs of the CD, and we have a new member, who plays the bass themes again in every songs( he is a God on his instrument, you'll see/hear!) Greetings and stay true! Pixi

Am I the only one who digs this song, or is it only Rob who has a principle against it?

- Dani, 2010-04-11 00:00:00

Its cool but I don't think its as good as the songs on OFIH.

- Kevin Gibbs, 2010-04-11 00:00:00

Agree, but still stronger than than Join the Legion, which is perhaps the closest comparision on this album. JtL has a memorable, but still quite weak chorus IMO. I think The Troll is the most One Foot'ish song from this LP. And it has a pretty intro too.
