Ashes to Ashes was formed in 1992 by Michael Stenberg, Björn Luna and Kristian Johansen. Since '92 the band has recorded 2 demo-tapes: "Between the devil and the deep blue sea" and "Temples of ice". Each tape was printed in 500 copies, and sold out quite rapidly.

In '98, after six years of rehearsing, experimenting with various styles of music, and playing occational live shows, the band finally began planning their debut album, "Shapes of Spirits". The recording and mixing took place in Gordon Studio in Oslo with engineer Thomas Sörlie in the spring of '99.
