Before the white men came, the Nee-mee-poo Native Americans covered the whole of the states of Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Chief Black Eagle always carried an eagle feather with him. During the French expedition in 1808, they were given the name "Nez Perce" which means "Pierced Nose". In actual fact, the Nee-mee-poo did not do "piercing". The tribe were one of the victims of the "Gold Rush". They wanted to escape to Canada but could not; they were driven out of their land and stuck in a reservation.
