This is my first article for Mighty Warrior. I hope this will be only the beginning of a long term relation. Thanks for reading and for letting me express my opinion.

WACKEN OPEN AIR 2002

WACKEN OPEN AIR 2002

The W.O.A. isn't a regular festival, it is –like many people call it- THE FESTIVAL. This was my first visit to Wacken and certainly it is the greatest thing ever. Before talking about the bands and the concerts, wich I supose is the most important thing, I'd like to mention the excellent organization, security, higyne, atmosphere... to be such a big festival with so many attendants (german, spanish, french, japanese, finish, argentinian, mexican, ...) I expected something different –maybe something worse- but everything was perfect, no fights, no bad attitudes, nothing bad at all. Like I said, it was perfect. About the concerts there were the great ,the good and the bad ones, and there were so many I couldn't see them all, I mean it's impossible. But well here's my review. We arrived on Wednesday morning and after camping and walking

all over the festival zone we went to the first shows wich were:

-KOTIPELTO: He fast fine, remembering his songs with  Stratovarius. He singed songs from his solo album and some of his original band. This last ones were the most cheered by the little crowd that listened to his performance

-BLAZE: The ex-Iron Maiden offered a pretty poor show with just a small audience.I left before he ended, to prepare myself for the upcoming concert. The best was yet to come

-DORO: If somebody surprised me during this Festival, it was Doro Pesch – The Metal Queen -. It seems impossible to someone of her age to sing so powerful and with such strenght. It was one of the best live shows of this Wacken without spectacular fireworks or a complicated stage production, just energy and complete dedication, lots of it . They  played  such  great

songs like "Burn it up" or the highly expected  "All we are".

-ROSE TATOO: Sincerely I couldn't see them, but what I heard was really good. This australians must have played a great show because the people commented it till the next day.

Friday was the day my landmates Avalanch were going to play so I had to wake up early. To be the only spanish metal band in Wacken 2002 and the debut of their new singer Ramon Lage, were more than great reasons to see them.

-AVALANCH: I arrived a bit late because of all the people waiting to get in the festival. I could only see the last four songs and it was enough to realize that this wasn't the proper singer for Avalanch. And the sound wasn't good at all.
I could also see the shows of Domine –whose singer Moby toured some years ago with Labirynth when I saw them-, Rebellion and some others to enter the Metal Market –the heavy metal paradise-. I came back to see Iron Savoir.

-IRON SAVIOR: Piet Sielck's band still plays with three guitars. With a tight show and playing lots of songs without stoping in order to show all of their material in just 40 minutes. I liked them a lot, but I miss the presence of   Kai Hansen.

-ANGRA: One of the bands I wanted to see the most. Their singer –Edu Falaschi- sounds fantastic in studio, but he's even better live. Maybe my favourite singer of all the festival –after Doro, of course-. They didn't played any songs from "Fireworks" and just perform their biggest hits from their best albums –"Holy Land", "Angels Cry" & "Rebirth"-. ReallyImpressive to see everyone singing along to "Carry On". A really good show, flawless performance.

-NOCTURNAL RITES: This is a band wich studio albums I love, even more with their new singer since "Afterlife". But live they weren't that good, I guess I expected too much. But anyway the show was quite good, lots of strength, but not much melody.

-PRETTY MAIDS: I just had the chance to hear the last songs of this great Hard Rock band. But at least I could hear their legendary "Future World" & "Back to Back" –yes, the one Hammerfall cover in "Legacy of Kings"-. They played really good, and I was really satisfied to see one of the greatest bands ever.

-SAVATAGE: This one was the band I was expecting for. I couldn't see them in their last spanish tour with Judas Priest, and so I was really anxious to see them live, to see the "great" Jon Oliva –"great" in every sense- Over a pedestal with his keyboards beside him, Jon delighted us with his improved voice. But the main attraction, wasn't Jon Oliva's performance. It was Jeff Waters (Annihilator guitar player) playing the Savatage tunes wich he learned in less than a month and of course the new singer –I'm sorry but I can't remember his name very well: Jinhiya or something like that-. Both of them kicked ass, the same way as Cris Caffery. They were one of the most important shows of the festival and their crowd went nuts. I felt the goosebumps when 30 or 40 thousand people singed "Believe".

-DESTRUCTION: Althought I'm not a big fan of the band, they really played awesome! Althought they had some technical problems they fixed those as the show went by. The crowd enjoyed a lot!

-BRUCE DICKINSON: The great Iron Maiden singer isn't the one he used to be, at least that's what he showed in his performance. A rythmles show and really boring. Not even his constant runs across the stage or his uplifting words to the crowd get to cheer the audience. The only thing we could save were the Maiden songs. Very sad for one of the biggest singers in heavy metal history.

-CHILDREN OF BODOM: A band I missed in their tour with Primal Fear because of my friend's car. I was very excited to see them live, and they didn't dissapointed me at all. There was a large quantityof fans –who weren't tired after the Dickinson show-. Great show, Alexi Laiho showed what he is capable of.

After all this I left to the tent completly tired. I'm sorry not to be able to see In Extremo or Warlord –with Joacim Cans as their frontman-, but I was really weary. Nevertheless from my sleeping bag, I had the chance to hear the entire JBO show. This germans must be a real thing here, cause I see them in the cover of the german magazine Hammer. Their show was based on playing most of their songs and some cover versions of "Carry On" from Manowar or "Ace of Spades" from Motorhead.
