JUDAS PRIEST + DRACONIAN
April 6, 2002
MADRID

Only two days after the Rhapsody concert, once again there I was at Aqualung to see the fathers of Heavy Metal, the almighty Judas Priest. It's been almost a year since the last time they played in Spain, at much larger venues. Still supporting the latest album "Demolition", so there weren't many surprises, but the crowd was definitely there to hear the old stuff anyways (the show was sold out). The sound seemed to be much better than the Rhapsody concert. All the instrumentation was crystal clear, as well as Owens' vocals. So thumbs up to the sound man, 'cause the sound was perfect.

The night started with Spain's DRACONIAN delivering a set of classic heavy metal from their debut album "To Outlive The War" that don’t take long to warm up the crowd. Their set lasted for about 45 minutes and consisted of several tracks from their debut, which was unleashed last year. They ended the set with a new song called "Pathetic World". These guys appeared to have many fans in attendance and they were actually good, I might check out their album sometime in the near future.

And then JUDAS PRIEST. The set was almost the same as in Cádiz last year (read the review). "Beyond The Realms Of Death" and "Turbo Lover" were dusted off, two songs that I never thought I'd see performed live... Anyway, on with the show... through the chants of the crowd and the darkness of the stage the Metal Gods themselves, Judas Priest, hit the stage dressed in black leather jackets and trousers and went straight into "Metal Gods" which always gets the audience fired up, as a start song it works wonders. The sound was crystal clear right from the start and the vocals were clearly audible. Up next is "Heading Out To The Highway", followed by "A Touch Of Evil" off 1990’s Painkiller album which sent the already crazy crowd absolutely nuts. The dual axe attack on "Victim Of Changes" is AMAZING! Newer material off last year’s Demolition album came next, "One On One". It just simply works better live. Next is the marvellous "Diamonds And Rust". Shivers down my spine. Just acoustic guitar and voice. Then they went through "Green Manalishi", "Beyond The Realms Of Death", "Burn In Hell" and "Hell Is Home". "Breaking The Law" emerges as the real crowd pleaser. It had every one of this sell out crowd singing along. A little surprise (for many of us) was the return of a song from the year 1986, "Turbo Lover". Over 1000 people singing "I'm your Turbo Lover, tell me there's no other..." was an emotional moment. Of course, Ripper Owens appeared on a Harley Davidson motorcycle during the opening chords of "Painkiller". As usual, it was a blast, my mind was completely absent during this killer song. After the break, the intro from "Electric Eye" and there it was. Lots of fans were singing along every line of "Living After Midnight" and the final icing on the cake was set closer "Hell Bent For Leather", getting the well earned standing ovation they absolutely deserve. Again, the two albums they've done with Ripper were hardly touched, only a couple of songs from the new album "Demolition", a couple of songs from "Jugulator" and tons of Priest classics in the almost two-hour set. No "You've Got Another Thing Coming" unfortunately :-( The band seemed to be having a great time on stage, despite the constrictions of playing a small club. Ripper's voice was flawless as usual but his song introductions seemed to be exactly the same as at the last show, guitarists Downing and Tipton still drive the band with their distinctive riffs, drummer Scott Travis... well, you need to see this yourself, hehe... and Ian Hill was, as usual, totally into what he was doing. Leaving the show, I didn't hear one bad word from anyone (except that they didn't play "Another Thing"). Priest might not be filling the stadiums anymore, but they put more energy and attitude into their performance than a lot of bands half their age do. BTW, there are more and more rumors swirling around that Halford will be coming back to Priest after this tour... let's see what happens -Review & photos: Marina-
