PRIMAL FEAR + METALIUM

MADRID

This year I had the chance to attend one of the Wacken Roadshows. It was the first time that this tour had hit Spain. Unfortunately, FREEDOM CALL & DARK AGE weren't on the bill at any of these Spanish shows. But despite that it was truly a great Heavy Metal night with two of Germany's finest bands!! When I arrived it was still early and the crowd was still gathering so I found a nice bar to have a drink. At 9PM the doors opened.

German Power Metallers METALIUM offered a blistering set of damn good, straightforward Metal which mixed material from the four albums the band have released to date. "Fight" was the song that started off their set and the sound was very good, the band rocked the place hard and seemed like they were totally enjoying every minute. Some other songs that they ended up playing included: "No One Will Save You" (one of my fave tracks from the new album), "Odin's Spell", the ballad "Prophecy", "Break The Spell", "Metalium", "In The Name Of Blood", "Rasputin", "As One" and the sing-along "Free Forever". Metalium put on an excellent show, ending with a rendition of "Balls To The Wall"... haha! it couldn't have ended any better :) Accept rulz!! With an out-of-this-world vocalist, good guitar work and a powerful rhythm section, Metalium managed to win over the crowd. I wish they would have played a longer show, I missed songs like "Steel Avenger" and "Years Of Darion", but it still was a great show and I had a very good time as always.

The also German PRIMAL FEAR were the headliners on this tour. It was my 5th time seeing them. I really like their latest album. "Devil's Ground" might be my favorite Primal Fear album next to their debut. The songs were played with the precision expected from Primal Fear and of course Ralf Scheepers' voice was stellar, although not as good as on previous tours. The new drummer, Randy Black (former member of Annihilator and Rebellion), fits into the band well and played excellent! His drumming simply blew me away. The band opened with the spoken word title track "Devil's Ground" that closes the new album and then they erupted like a volcano through some great songs like "Angel In Black", "Chainbreaker", and "Nuclear Fire".

My favorite songs of the show were "Running In The Dust" that went down really well with the crowd as usual, "Suicide And Mania", with plenty of killer solos and guitar gallops from Tom and Stefan, "Visions Of Fate" -in my opinion the BEST song off the new CD, the chorus is simply great- and the anthemic "Metal Is Forever", which was played twice in the set (!!), and had the fans roaring. These songs absolutely rocked live. So, to sum up, a great concert, the heaviest I've ever seen them play, with a good mix of songs. I left the venue happy, METAL IS FOREVER…FOREVER! still echoing in my ears.
