S.A.D.O / Scanner
The Marquee Club, London, UK - 1988.10.03
Verdict: A bad mistake

I´M TRYING to be as objective and positive as I can, OK? I don´t wan´t to use these two German acts as mere fodder for a series of clever, witty one-line put downs. I´d much rather forget about the night entirely. But duty calls . . .

So, where to begin? Well, obviosly with supportband Scanner. Their recent Noise-released album, 'Hypertrace', wasn´t at all bad. Reasonably played, reasonable songs. But live . . . a disaster! The crowd watchingwas sparse, but I have seen bands in the past pull something so spectacular out of the bag that they´ve managed to turn into disinterest into an ecstatic reception. Scanner, though, just died. And they deserved no better.

Musically, theyare the pure jokebook, offering nothing fresh, exciting or rivetting. The twin guitars of Axel AJ Julius and Tom S. Sopha proffer little outside of Subatomic Accept/Scorpions splutterings, the rythm section of Martin Bork (bass) and Wolfgang Kolorz (drums) plods with a muddy insignificance and as for lead vocalist Michael M.AJ.O.R. Knoblich . . . any man who wears an enama kit on his back and prances around sounding like an inebriated rhino deserves only contempt.

In short, Scanner, were a dreadfully clichéd, hopeless mess best forgotten about. True, they were 'blessed' with an appalling sound but this cannot excuse incompetance.

MALCOLM DOME - RAW BRITAIN´S NEW ROCK MAGAZINE

Gallows Pole
Matrix, Bochum, Germany - 2000.09.17

This band plays a good melodic hard rock. The leader and the bassist of the band, John Smith, wore in white and played loud and sang very powerful. Two guitarists behind John, backing up John's vocal with some cool guitar riffs, were playing each other in a different style. One playslike Gary Moore, a bit blues and a bit heavy rock, and another plays like Ace Frehley, the guitaristof KISS, all time rock'n roll!! Drum sound was also very loud and powerful. Each song has a slightly different mood to enjoy, but I'd say their performance was good enough to know what kind of music they are creating and in which direction they are heading for...only one thing I have to complain, is that their show-time was too short to recognise them as a promising band in Germany. You know, what I mean...

Duke
Matrix, Bochum, Germany - 2000.09.17

Well, I have to confess, Gallows Pole played much better than Duke. Main songwriter and the founder of the band, Haridon Lee, seemed to enjoy himself very much, but I think his performance did not appeal to audience well. Songwriting itself is not so bad, I guess, but their performance could not show their attraction perfectly. Maybe because the sound volume of the band was not so loud that the audience (german audience always wants to hear loud and powerful sound!) missed some cool parts that the band might play. Haridon came down from the stage onto the hall floor during the show and he made a desperate effort to appeal their heavy metal, approaching the audience, but I'm wondering if this sort of performance was really needed that night. For me that was too much. Anyway, the band also played well, but there is one thing that would be better for Duke to change: performance. If you say it's their own originality and attraction, well, then I'd say nothing about it, but if they keep going in that way, this band would no longer bigger...
