Helloween-Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 2 1988 Noise Records

The album starts off with some Medieval-ish intro called "Invitation", then bursts gracefully into "Eagle Fly Free", a fast-paced Power Metal song. I almost forgot how awesome Kiske's vocals were before I just put this on. The guitars are full of melody, and harmonizing very much like the almighty Maiden. "You Always Walk Alone" even sounds like it could be on "Somewhere In Time", especially with the layered guitars in the intro. Who could forget the classic track, "I Want Out"!? If Germany has an "Iron Maiden", it's definetly these guys. "Rise And Fall" sounds pretty happy but it's still a really cool song, despite the vocal part that sounds like Journey, in the chorus. If you pass this in a store, PICK IT UP! It's obviously a classic by my standards, and it sure as hell beats Blind Guardian or Hammerfall. And the production is killer.

Reverse Reality- Self-titled Demo 2001

In April 2002, before I left for California, I went with my girlfriend to this show that her friends in Circus Of Destruction were playing at, in some church hall, and upon arrival, onstage was this band, plugging in and tuning up, and I noticed the guitarist/vocalist (who goes by the name "The Wizard", probably Sabbath-derivative) looked a hell of a lot like Lemmy from Motorhead (one of their main influences). So I thought this band might be pretty cool, so I stayed at the front of the stage and watched the show, after which, I sat down and spoke with Wizard and bassist Mike Marshall. Mike ended up handing me this demo...

It's well-produced, very clear but very raw, like Motorhead. The lyrics seem a bit cliche 'ala "sex, drugs, n rock n roll" but they definetly fit the southern-tinged punk-metal shred on the demo and in their live performance. Their musical inspiration comes from Sabbath, Motorhead, Mountain, Govt. Mule, Grand Funk Railroad, Kiss, Deep Purple, etc. and I personally think it really shows, especially the grittier stuff. Definetly a good drinking CD!

Treachery-There Will Be Blood (demo)

This 4 song demo was mailed to me by bassist Eric Boyd, after I met him at a Deicide/Morbid Angel show in late 2001. He describes them as "Progressive Metal", but it comes off more like mid-late 80's Philly Thrash Metal (actually, the band is from Lancaster, PA).

The CD starts off with a track called "Necropolis" which is reminiscent of such 80's thrashers as Nemesis, and Nuclear Assault. The guitars (played by Evan Wooley) sound slightly detuned on this one, and there is no solo.

"Price Of The Martyr" comes in a bit slower, but picks up in pace after a minute or so. I'm starting to notice the vocalist, Aaron Hendren, seems to hold back a bit, not really belting it out. It's kind of just an angry thrash-growl 'ala Annihilator. After 3 minutes or so, there is a clean section with light vocals over it, sort of atmospheric, which is a nice change in pace and mood.

"Treachery" starts off with a very Di'anno-era Iron Maiden feel- single noted guitar/basslines, similar to "Phantom Of The Opera". It seems to keep the Maiden influence within the rest of the track, but it's still aggressive and thrash influenced.

"Blood", the demo's closer is probably the fastest track on here, almost reminiscent of old Slayer, yet with the vocalist still holding back a bit.

This isn't the most professional demo I've heard, but there is definetly potential for the band to grow, and become something a lot more memorable. Time will tell.

MOTORHEAD-SACRIFICE-CMC INTERNATIONAL-1995

THIS IS PROBABLY THE HEAVIEST MOTORHEAD ALBUM EVER RECORDED; OR AT LEAST THAT I HAVE HEARD. IT'S STILL MOTORHEAD, FULL OF DIRTY DISTORTED GUITAR RIFFS, BLUESY SOLOS, GRITTY VOCALS, SPEEDY DRUMMING, AND PUMMELING RAUNCHY BASSLINES. BUT THIS ALBUM SEES THEM GETTING A BIT MORE AGGRESSIVE THOUGH, EVEN SLIGHTLY DETUNING (OR AT LEAST IT SOUNDS LIKE IT).

SONGS LIKE "WAR FOR WAR", "SEX AND DEATH", AND "SACRIFICE" REALLY PUSH THE ENVELOPE FOR WHAT MOTORHEAD HAS DONE IN THE PAST, BREAKING NEW TEMPO RATES FOR THEM, AND USING METALLICA-FLAVORED THRASH RIFFING 'ALA "FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE". I GUESS THIS IS MY FAVORITE STUDIO ALBUM FROM THEM, NOT INCLUDING THE "BEST OF" PACKAGES, ETC. PLUS, THE HELLACIOUS ARTWORK MAKES IT MORE WORTH YOUR MONEY!

USURPER-VISIONS FROM THE GODS-NECROPOLIS RECORDS-2000

THIS DIGIPACK CD HAS RARE DEMOS AND LIVE RECORDINGS, FROM THE NINETIES, AND FEATURES SOME KILLER ARTWORK. IT'S PACKED WITH VARIOUS BAND PHOTOS THROUGH THE YEARS, AND YES, THIS CD ACTUALLY HAS A LYRIC SHEET, FOR THOSE UNINTELLIGABLE WORDS BEING SPEWED FORTH, THAT WE CANNOT FIGURE OUT FOR OUR LIVES. USURPER ARE KNOWN AS CELTIC FROST RIP-OFFS, BUT I DON'T THINK THEY SOUND ALL THAT MUCH LIKE THEM, BUT THE FROST INFLUENCE IS STILL VERY OBVIOUS. ACTUALLY, I WAS KINDA DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY DIDN'T SOUND MORE LIKE CELTIC FROST HAHA! THAT'S THE REASON I WANTED TO CHECK USURPER OUT. THE VOCALIST DOES USE THE OCCASIONAL TOM G. WARRIOR "HEYYY!!!!" THOUGH. IN AN AGE WHEN MOST EXTREME BANDS ARE JUST A GENERIC SLEW OF BAD BATHORY RIP-OFFS, IT'S KINDA GOOD TO HEAR A BAND THAT USES MORE OF A CELTIC FROST INFLUENCE, ALTHOUGH I WOULDN'T NECESSARILY CALL THIS FULL-ON BLACK METAL. MORESO DEATH METAL WITH BLACK METAL INFLUENCES. LOTSA SPEEDY RIFFAGE, CHUNKY POWER CHORDS, AND DARK, DEEP BELLOWS FOR ALL THE LIL KIDDIES. ON HALLOWEEN, PLAY THIS CD ON YOUR PORCH WHILE GIVING OUT CANDY.

HOLOCAUST-THE NIGHTCOMERS -2000 (RE-RELEASED) -METAL BLADE RECORDS

YET ANOTHER NWOBHM ALBUM REVIEWED BY YOURS TRULY. THE TIMING OF ME GETTING THIS CD IS PERFECT. I JUST READ THEIR INTERVIEW IN METAL MANIACS, AND I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM THEIR NEW MEMBER, "BUDGIE" FROM THE NWOBHM SITE, THAT ALL OF YOU ARE PROBABLY FAMILIAR WITH. IN TIME, A HOLOCAUST INTERVIEW WILL BE ON THIS SITE, WITH THEIR NEW MEMBER, AND POSSIBLY ONE OF THE OTHER GUYS TOO.

MOST OF THE MUSIC IS WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM AN NWOBHM BAND, BUT I SEE NOW WHY "DEATH OR GLORY" WAS THEIR MOST PRIZED SONG. SO HEAVY AND ANGRY. THE ONLY HOLOCAUST SHIT I HAD BEFORE THIS CD WAS "DEATH OR GLORY" ON MP3, AND "THE SMALL HOURS" ON A BURNT CD. THIS OTHER STUFF IS A LITTLE CHEESY, BUT IF YOU ARE READING THIS, ON THIS CHEESY WEBSITE, AND FIND THAT OFFENSIVE, THEN FUCK OFF! TRUE METAL FANS LOVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CHEESE! TRUE METAL IS CHEESE, AND I FUCKIN' LOVE IT! AS LONG AS IT DON'T GET TOO CHEESY. SPINAL TAP FOR INSTANCE, THATS A LITTLE TOO CHEESY, BUT 1984 ERA IRON MAIDEN-PERFECT AMOUNT OF CHEDDAR FOR YA.

TO SUM IT UP, I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING OTHER THAN, IF YOU LOVE CLASSIC BRIT METAL, YOU SHOULD LIKE THIS QUITE A BIT. HELL, IT HAS BONUS TRACKS TOO. "HEAVY METAL MANIA" IS A KICK ASS SONG AS WELL MAN. JUST BUY THE FUCKIN' THING. AND, THERE IS NO RATING FOR THIS, IT'S JUST A ROCKIN' GOOD FUCKIN' ALBUM!

Danzig-(Self-titled)- 1988-Def American Records

This debut album established Glenn Danzig and co. as an isolated unit, outside of trends or scenes going on at the time. There were no other bands that could beso easily compared to Danzig, as the way you might compare Iron Maiden to Judas Priest, or Kreator to Sodom.

The guitar style of John Christ can be traced to Tony Iommi’s playing, only with more clarity in tone, and morefocus in riffage, and song structure. The bass playing isn’t outstanding or ground-breaking,but Eerie Von did have a lot of charisma. The drumming of ex-Black Flag skinsman Chuck Biscuits is excellent, as he keeps in time perfectly, and tastefully adds drum rolls where they are due. And he really knows how to hit with impact, and get a tight sound. Now, as for Glenn himself...

            Far-removed from the cartoonish punk-metal act of his former years, the Misfits,Glenn has learned how to hit notes a lot better, and has become more a singerthan ever before, and his material has gotten a lot more serious. Compare himto an “Evil Elvis” if you wish, I preferrably refer to him as Jim Morrison reincarnated, after one bad visit to Hell. Metaphorically speaking that is. No other vocalist in the heavy metal genre sounds quite like him (well, that I have heard anyway). He doesn’t use any gruff vocals or growling; he just uses adeep, dark bluesy voice, and damn this white boy got soul...

IRON MAIDEN-SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON-1988 CAPITOL RECORDS

THIS WAS MY FAVORITE MAIDEN ALBUM FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, BECAUSE OF THE PASSION IN THE SONGS, ESPECIALLY "INFINITE DREAMS", MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE MAIDEN SONG. THESE AREN'T THE KIND OF SONGS THAT JUST PLAIN ROCK OR ANYTHING, THEY KIND OF TAKE YOU OUT OF THIS WORLD. VERY ADVENTUROUS. YOU CAN GET LOST IN THIS ALBUM, AND I HAVE HUNDREDS OF TIMES OVER AND OVER. NOW THAT IS SOMETHING YOU GOTTA GIVE THEM RESPECT FOR. MAKING AN ALBUM THAT JUST TAKES YOU AWAY, LIKE A DREAM. THE IRONY OF THAT TOO, CONSIDERING THE LYRICS TO THE AFOREMENTIONED TRACK...

THIS HAS SYNTHESIZER ON QUITE A FEW TRACKS, BUT THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE AS LONG AS YOU DON'T ANALYZE THE ALBUM, YOU DON'T EVEN REALIZE IT'S THERE. IT HAS EVERYTHING YOU WOULD COME TO EXPECT FROM IRON MAIDEN, BEAUTIFUL HARMONIES, AND A FEW ROUSING CHORUSES, BUT NOT LIKE THE BLAZE MATERIAL, WHERE THE CHORUS COMES ACROSS 16 TIMES PER SONG.

SO WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY? I'LL JUST END THIS WITH MY CLICHE' ENDING, BUY OR DIE!

JUDAS PRIEST-DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH-1984-CBS Records

THIS 1984 ALBUM WAS THE FIRST PRIEST I EVER OWNED, AND SADLY TO SAY, IT WAS AT K-MART, IN THE $5 BIN. TO BE TOTALLY HONEST, IT TOOK ME A YEAR BEFORE I REALLY APPRECIATED THIS ALBUM TO A GREAT EXTENT. I WAS 14 AT THE TIME, AND I WAS MORE INTO THRASHIER STUFF. I MEAN, I COULDN'T GET INTO BRUCE DICKINSON THAT MUCH AT THE TIME, I THOUGHT HE SOUNDED TOO "FRUITY" OR SOMETHING, SO YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW I FELT ABOUT HALFORD. BUT MY TASTE WENT TOWARDS MORE OLDSCHOOL POWER METAL, LIKE THIS, AS TIME WORE ON.

THE THING I REALLY LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS IS THAT EACH SONG IS SO MEMORABLE...WHO CAN FORGET "IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT! LOVE BITES! LOVE BITES!" OR, "SOME HEADS ARE GONNA ROLL! SOME HEADS ARE GONNA ROLL-OOOLL!". THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM TOTAL BANG YOUR HEAD ALBUMS, SOME OF THE STUFF IS REAL MELODIC AND LAID BACK, BUT MAN THE SONG WRITING IS SO EXCELLENT, AND ROB'S VOICE IS SO CLEAR AND EAR PIERCING.

THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL I CAN SAY TO SUM THIS UP, OTHER THAN THAT, JUST BUY THE FUCKIN' THING. STRANGE, I JUST NOTICED SOMETHING, THE FIRST PRIEST AND MAIDEN LPS I EVER OWNED WERE BOTH FROM '84... ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: "FREEWHEEL BURNING", "ROCK HARD, RIDE FREE", AND "THE SENTINEL".

(VARIOUS ARTISTS)-A TRIBUTE TO VENOM-DEADLINE RECORDS- 1998

This is one of my favorite tribute albums, because it features some actual good bands, that i am familiar with, instead of 14 death metal bands, ruining the songs, as with many other tribute albums, especially the horrible Dwell Records ones. This one includes such legendary acts as Sodom, Kreator, and Candlemass, bands that i own albums by. It also includes songs recorded by the Electric Hellfire Club, Voivod, Paradise Lost, Nuclear Assault, Skyclad, and Anathema.

Skyclad's version of "Prime Evil" is a standout track, adding some sort of outside instrument, i don't know what the hell it is, possibly a fiddle haha! But it sounds good anyway, not like it overtakes the whole track, as often happens sometimes these days when bands try to be "clever", and end up ruining the song.

Hellfire Club's rendition of "Sacrifice" is another standout track, matching quality of the original, except for the monotonous vocals. If Cronos guest-sang on this track, it would be just perfect. Musically, the songs are pretty much all good, but the vocalists tend to ruin it. Voivod are so praised by the metal community, but damn this vocalist is just plain horrible. He sounds like Ozzy after a few hits of crack or something. I don't know much about Candlemass, but if I recall, Messiah was gone from the band at this time, but he guest stars here, on an operatic metal version of "Countess Bathory". the music isn't too much different, just better produced basically, but the vocals of Messiah, just totally add new depth to the song. He sounds the same as he always did.

God, what is wrong with the vocalists in Anathema and Nuclear Assault on this? Horrible as the Voivod vocals! I don't know much about Nuclear Assault or Voivod, other than they are classic era metal bands, and i've heard one or two N. A. songs, but i hope these aren't the same vocalists that got these bands metal recognition in the first place. There is an industrial re-mix of "Warhead" and it really does the original mix no justice. The last track is a Venom track called "Holy Man", and to me, it sounds more like Nine Inch Nails, moreso than venom.

HYPOCRISY-(SELF-TITLED-Nuclear Blast Records-(1999)

Melodic metal? Black metal? Thrash metal? Death metal? What the hell is this? This is Hypocrisy, an amalgam of all four, alongwith some classical influences. This is exactly what the metal world needsthese days, bands with originality, bands that can blur the edges that each sub-genre tag is confined to, and who can do so with such strong integrity.

            Album opener, “Fractured Millennium” is a very symphonic metal piece, featuringsynthesizers and beautifully crafted melodies. “Apocalyptic Hybrid” blendsblack metal riffing with good production, something which is hardly ever fused.But it’s not just another black metal song, it also has a slight Iron Maidenfeel to it, with the guitar licks. Peter uses a somewhat death metal-ish voiceon part of this song too. “Fusion Programmed Minds” starts off with a blackmetal scream, and a harmonized Maiden-tinged lick, and develops into an almostIn Flames melodic death metal vibe. My favorite song on here is “ElasticInverted Visions”. If you like “7th Son of a 7th Son”,this kind of paints that atmosphere, with the melodies and adventurous songstructure, but it’s a bit more extreme and more futuristic-sounding. The concepts on this album seem to be about what is commonly referred to as“sci-fi”, to some, but to Peter, there is nothing fiction about it. PeterTagtgren takes alienistic philosophies very seriously, and why shouldn’t he?It’s almost like what Megadeth did to me when I first heard “Hangar 18”. The 8thtrack, “Time Warp” resembles a young Glenn Danzig in his Misfits days, singingfor, and get this- Sodom, of all bands! Danzig with Sodom, what a concept. Iwonder, did he mean to sound like that? Track number 10, “Paled Empty Sphere”sounds very depressing, and you can almost imagine it being the soundtrack to“Terminator II: Judgement Day”; you know, the part where Sarah Conner isdreaming and she grabs the fence as the nuclear bomb hits, and it plays in slowmotion. Do I analyze too much? Oh well, who cares? There is a bonus track onthis too, it’s called “Self-inflicted Overload”, and it’s pretty cool, beingfilled with thrash-riffing with that signature Tagtgren flare to it.

The world of heavy metal is in a bad state right now, even if there are hundreds or even thousands of bands out there. There are just too many bands, fans, and press people out there, ruining it, and polluting it, with closed-minded,elitist thoughts and attitudes, and pretentious music (hey...kinda like us-Chris). Hypocrisy are one ofthe few bands, who I hope lead the next metal generation into the years thatlie ahead. The future lies in the hands of Hypocrisy.

WITCHFINDER GENERAL-FRIENDS OF HELL -1983-HEAVY METAL RECORDS

I CAN'T PUT THIS ALBUM ON RIGHT NOW, AS A REFERENCE TO THIS REVIEW, BECAUSE ONE DAY I HAD IT IN MY BASEMENT, AND THE NEXT, IT'S GONE. BUT I WILL WRITE ABOUT WHAT I REMEMBER ABOUT THIS. WITCHFINDER GENERAL WERE A VERY UNIQUE BAND FROM THE "NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL" SCENE, AND WERE OBVIOUSLY INFLUENCED MORESO BY BLACK SABBATH THAN ANYONE ELSE. THE VOCALS WERE VERY CLEAN AND CLEAR, BUT VERY DISTINCTIVE.

THIS IS WHAT DOOM SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AS, NOT THE ULTRA LOW, DEATH METAL GARBAGE THAT POLLUTES THE SCENE THESE DAYS. THIS ALSO HAS A SORT OF ANGEL WITCH FEEL TO IT, WHICH IS FINE BY ME.

THERE IS ONE SONG ON HERE THAT IS REALLY DEPRESSING. IT'S AN ACOUSTIC BALLAD ABOUT A GUY WHO'S WIFE BETRAYED HIM FOR ANOTHER MAN, BEHIND HIS BACK. HIS MOTHER WARNS HIM THAT SHE IS TROUBLE AND WILL BE UNFAITHFUL, BUT THE GUY IS BLINDED BY LOVE SO BAD THAT HE JUST SAYS "OH THAT WON'T HAPPEN", AND HE ENDS UP SINGING THE LINE, "CONTEMPLATING SUICIDE..." WHICH IS SOMETHING I'M SURE WE HAVE ALL BEEN AT, AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER. I HAVE BEEN THERE A LITTLE TOO MUCH, THAT'S WHY THIS SONG CONNECTS WITH ME SO WELL, ESPECIALLY SINCE I WAS THERE FOR THE SAME REASONS AS THE STORY TELLS. THERE ISN'T MUCH ELSE I CAN SAY ABOUT THIS, JUST THAT IT'S DEFINETLY WORTH YOU DOLLARS. I ONLY PAID $8 AT A STORE INFAMOUS OUT HERE, CALLED "ROCK N ROLL PLUS".

METALLICA-KILL 'EM ALL-MEGAFORCE RECORDS (1983)

WHY DO I CHOOSE TO REVIEW THIS ALBUM, YOU ASK? WELL, MORE OR LESS, TO POINT OUT WHERE THIS ALBUM COMES FROM. WHAT I MEAN IS, A LOT OF THIS ALBUM WAS INFLUENCED A LITTLE TOO STRONGLY BY OTHER BANDS. I'LL POINT OUT THE PARTS OF THE SONGS THAT ARE PRETTY MUCH LIFTED FROM OTHER BANDS.

"HIT THE LIGHTS"...WONDERFUL SONG EH? THE TITLE SEEMS REMINSCENT OF THE DIAMOND HEAD CLASSIC, "SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS", AND WE ALL KNOW HOW FOND METALLICA WAS OF DIAMOND HEAD. THE ORIGINAL CHORUS OF THIS SONG WAS ALSO SUNG ALMOST IDENTICALLY AS THE DIAMOND HEAD SONG AS WELL, BUT THE BAND DECIDED TO CHANGE THE WAY THE WORDS "HIT THE LIGHTS" WERE SUNG DURING THE ALBUMS RECORDING. THE INTRO, WITH THE ALTERNATLY PICKED CHORDS, FADING INTO THE SONG, IS VERY SIMILAR TO A SONG BY ANOTHER NWOBHM BAND, THIS TIME-WEAPON. THEIR SONG WAS CALLED "SET THE STAGE ALIGHT" AND FEATURED THE SAME INTRO PRETTY MUCH, ONLY WITH DIFFERENT CHORDS. EVEN THE OPENING LYRIC, "NO LIFE 'TIL LEATHER" SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN LIFTED FROM THE CLASSIC MOTORHEAD LIVE DISC, "NO SLEEP 'TIL HAMMERSMITH".

THE BASS SOLO, DUBBED "ANESTHESIA", IS A GREAT PIECE OF BASS-MASTERING. BUT LET'S FACE IT, IT REALLY WAS JUST A COMBINATION OF LEMMY'S BRUTALITY ON HIS DISTORTED BASS, AND GEEZER'S PSYCHADELIC, OUT OF THIS WORLD BASS STYLE, WHICH HE DEMONSTRATED, VERY "ANESTHETICALLY" ON THE OPENING TO "N.I.B.", DUBBED "BASICALLY", ON THE VERY FIRST BLACK SABBATH ALBUM, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE VERY FIRST HEAVY METAL ALBUM. NOW WE ALL KNOW WHO CLIFF'S BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON BASS WERE...ALTHOUGH THIS ONE GUITAR LICK ISN'T ON THE FINAL VERSION OF "PHANTOM LORD", DAVE MUSTAINE USED IT BACK BEFORE HE WAS BOOTED FROM THE BAND, AND IT WAS A LICK FROM ONE OF THE SONGS ON MERCYFUL FATE'S "MELISSA" ALBUM. DAVE LATER USED IT ON A MEGADETH SONG, WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THEIR SECOND LP, "PEACE SELLS...". "SEEK & DESTROY" PRETTY MUCH COMES FROM A DIAMOND HEAD SONG TITLED "DEAD RECKONING". IT'S NOT AS OBVIOUS AS THE OTHER COMPARISONS, BUT IF YOU ARE A GUITARIST, YOU WILL SEE THE SIMILARITIES. EVEN THE VERSE RIFFS IN BOTH SONGS ARE ALMOST IDENTICLE. THE SIMILAR RIFF THAT ENDS UP IN THE SOLO SECTION IS LIFTED FROM YET ANOTHER NWOBHM BAND, THIS TIME BEING SAXON. IF YOU LISTEN TO "PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT", YOU WILL SEE INSTANTLY WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

I WAS THIRTEEN, IN THE EIGHT GRADE, AND I REMEMBER GOING INTO SAM GOODY'S OR COCONUTS, WHATEVER STORE IT WAS, AND BUYING THIS, REMEMBERING IRON MAIDEN POSTERS DECORATING MY BROTHER'S WALLS AS A YOUNG CHILD AND BEING FASCINATED WITH "EDDIE" AND HIS GRIM PORTRAYALS.

FOR THOSE OF YOU SORRY EXCUSES OF METALHEADS WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT IRON MAIDEN SOUNDS LIKE, I WILL DESCRIBE THIS AWESOME COLLECTION OF SONGS. MOST OF THESE SONGS ARE SOMEWHAT EPIC, FULL OF POWER METAL RIFFING, AND BEAUTIFUL TWIN GUITAR HARMONIES, MELODIES, AND LICKS. THE PRODUCTION IS TIGHT AS HELL FOR THAT TIME IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES. BRUCE'S VOICE WAS AS ALWAYS, FULL OF SCREECHING HIGHS, CAPABLE OF HITTING ANY NOTE IMAGINABLE. STEVE HARRIS' BASSLINES WERE VERY ORIGINAL, NOT ALWAYS PLAYING ALONG TO THE BASSDRUM OR THE RYTHEM GUITAR. NICKO MCBRAIN'S DRUMMING WAS PERFECT FOR THIS ALBUM, BETTER THAN ALL THESE NON-STOP BLAST BEAT "GRIND" DRUMMERS. THE LYRICS DEAL WITH WAR, EGYPT, AND H.P. LOVECRAFT-ISH THEMES. THIS IS ONE BAND THAT NEVER GOT UGLY, THEY ALWAYS PLAYED BEAUTIFUL AND PASSIONETTE MUSIC THAT WILL ALWAYS KEEP A HUGE CIRCLE OF LOYAL IRON MAIDEN FANS WHO BELIEVE IN IRON MAIDEN AND ALWAYS EXPECT THE BEST FROM THEM. THIS ALBUM IS DEFINETLY WORTH YOUR MONEY. I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE THE HEAVY METAL WORLD BEING THE SAME WITHOUT IRON MAIDEN.

THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY "WEIRD" IDEAS GOING ON IN METAL, THAT JUST COME OFF TOO PRETENTIOUS, SO I HAVE A TENDENCY TO LISTEN TO OLDER BANDS MORE. THEN I HEARD A FEW SONGS, HERE AND THERE, ON A STATION OUT HERE IN PHILLY CALLED 94.1 WYSP. THEY ARE A REGULAR KID ROCK, METALLICA, PEARL JAM STATION, BUT ON FRIDAY NIGHTS THEY HAVE THIS METAL/"METAL" PROGRAM CALLED "ROCKERS". I ALSO HAVE A METALLICA TRIBUTE FROM 1994 WITH IN FLAMES DOING "EYE OF THE BEHOLDER" WITH REALLY WEAK VOCALS. BUT ANYWAY, I WAS INTRIGUED ENOUGH TO GET ONE OF THEIR CD'S, AND I GOT THIS ONE. HERE WE GO...

"CLAYMAN" FEATURES VERY PASSIONETTE IRON MAIDEN-ISH MELODIES AND LEAD GUITAR, THE BOTTOM END (TIGHTER THAN MOST MODERN METAL BANDS THOUGH) OF DEATH METAL, AND SOME VERY CONFUSING VOCALS...SOMETIMES CLEAN AND POWER METAL-ISH, AND SOMETIMES A RASPY BLACK/DEATH METAL STYLE. DO ANY OF YOU OWN MEGADETH'S "RUST IN PEACE"? WELL IF YOU DO, LISTEN TO "DAWN PATROL". THOSE KINDA VOCALS ARE ALSO USED SPARRINGLY ON THIS ALBUM. THE STRONGEST POINT IN IN FLAMES ARE THE GUITARS. THE VOCALS AREN'T EXACTLY MY CUP OF TEA, BUT THEY MESH WELL WITH THE BANDS STYLE. THE DRUMMING AND BASS-WORK AREN'T TOO PIONEERING, BUT THEY MAINTAIN A TIGHT SOUND THROUGH-OUT THE DISC. "SWIM" HAS A VERY IRON MAIDEN/WHITE SPIRIT KIND OF RIFF (ER...LICK I SHOULD SAY) IN THE INTRO. I JUST LOVE IT! SO I STRONGLY SUGGEST ANY OLDSCHOOL METALLERS WHO GENERALLY FEEL THE WAY I DO ABOUT NEWER METAL, TO BUY THIS ALBUM. IT WILL GROW ON YOU AND MAY BE A PORTAL TO OTHER NEWER TALENTS. THIS ONE IS FROM THE LATE '80S, AND IT REALLY WOWED ME WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT. THE SONGS ARE PRETTY MUCH ALL IN THE SAME STYLE, OLD-SCHOOL DEATH METAL, BEFORE EVERYONE SOUNDED LIKE CANNIBAL CORPSE. IT'S NOT OVERLY PRODUCED AND EXTRA THICK EITHER, IT KIND OF HAS THAT MEGADETH TIGHTNESS TO IT, WHICH IS GREAT IN MY OPINION. THE VOCALS AREN'T THE REAL DEEP KIND, THEY ARE A LITTLE RASPY, KIND OF BLACK METALISH. THERE REALLY ISN'T MUCH SLOW-PACED RIFFING ON THIS ALBUM. IT'S PRETTY MUCH JUST AN ASS-KICKING ALL THE WAY THROUGH. IT'S A SHAME YOU DON'T HEAR MUCH DEATH METAL IN THIS VEIN ANYMORE. HEY, MAYBE YOU DO, BUT I DON'T. I DON'T LISTEN TO MUCH DEATH METAL BECAUSE A LOT OF IT IS PRETENTIOUS AND BORING, AND MOST OF THE BANDS SOUND THE SAME. I AM PRETTY MUCH A THRASHER, AND I THINK THIS ALBUM HAS MORE APPEAL TO A THRASHER THAN IT DOES TO YOUR AVERAGE "BRUTAL DEATH METAL" FAN. AWESOME ARTWORK TOO. AND THE ADDED DEMOS ARE JUST AS WELL PRODUCED AS THE REGULAR TRACKS, MINUS THE TINY TAPE FLUB IN "NO TRUTH". ALL IN ALL, A KICK-ASS ALBUM THAT YOU SHOULD BUY IF YOU AREN'T A FAN OF THE MORE AGGRESSIVE SIDE OF METAL; EVEN IF DEATH METAL ISN'T YOUR THING (IT GENERALLY ISN'T MINE EITHER), YOU MIGHT LIKE THIS. RELEASED IN 1985, EXODUS' DEBUT DIDN'T TREAD ANY NEW GROUND, SUCH AS THAT EXPLORED BY METALLICA, SLAYER, AND MEGADETH AT THIS TIME, BUT IT WAS A CLASSIC THRASH METAL GEM BY MY STANDARDS. THERE ARE PLENTY OF THRASHING RIFFS TO GO AROUND TO ALL THE LIL CAMPERS AND MAKE THEM WANNA JUMP IN THE (CAMP) FIRE AND SCREAM, "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!". THE LEADS AREN'T TOO BRILIANT, DUE TO KIRK LEAVING EXODUS AND JOINING METALLICA, BUT THEY AREN'T TOO BAD EITHER. THERE REALLY ISN'T MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS ALBUM OTHER THAN IT THRASHINGLY ROCKS...SO GO BUY IT!---ERIK CHRUPALYK

BUT NOW HIS VOICE ISN'T SO ANNOYING FOR SOME ODD REASON...IT'S LIKE, I'M USED TO IT, EVEN THOUGH I HAD ALREADY BEEN A HUGE FATE FAN FOR YEARS WHEN I GOT THIS. THE PRODUCTION WAS ALSO KEEPING ME FROM LIKING THIS. BUT AS TIME WORE ON, I BECAME MORE AND MORE FOND OF THIS ALBUM, AND MERCYFUL FATE IN GENERAL.

THE SONGS HERE ARE MOSTLY EPIC POWER METAL SONGS WITH SATANIC LYRICS AND KING DIAMOND'S RASPING AND FALSETTO VOCALS. THE LEADS ARE BRILLIANT AND OF THE IRON MAIDEN SCHOOL. THESE SONGS ARE VERY PROGRESSIVE WHICH WAS KIND OF GROUNDBREAKING AT THIS TIME IN THE HISTORY OF METAL. THERE ARE LOTS OF CLEAN RIFFS, ACOUSTIC RIFFS, AND JUST PLAIN EVIL MELODY. I CAN CLEARLY SEE HOW THE INFLUENCE OF MERCYFUL FATE CAME UPON MEGADETH AND SANCTUARY. TO SUM IT UP, BUY OR DIE!

PURE FUCKING MAYHEM! (NO NOT MAYHEM THE BAND) THIS ALBUM, ALONG WITH THE ONE BEFORE IT (THAT WOULD BE THE 1981 VENOM DEBUT- "WELCOME TO HELL") TOTALLY BROUGHT FORTH A FEW DAWN IN METAL. THE DAWN OF "EXTREME METAL". WHILE NOT AS DISTORTED AND BRUTAL AS A CARCASS OR FEAR FACTORY ALBUM, THE MUSIC IS SO PRIMAL AND RAW THAT THIS KIND OF THING HAS MORE RUSH AND RAGE TO IT THEN THE AFOREMENTIONED BANDS' ALBUMS. TRY PLAYING GUITAR ALONG WITH THIS AND HALF THE TIME, THE STUFF IS PLAYED SO SLOPPILY THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN FIGURE OUT WHAT CHORDS MANTAS IS HITTING! JUST PUT IT THIS WAY, IF I WERE TO CATCH VENOM LIVE, I WOULD BE HAPPY IF THEIR SETLIST JUST CONSISTED OF PLAYING THIS ALBUM ALL THE WAY THROUGH, FROM BACK TO FRONT. THAT'S HOW GOOD THIS THING IS. NOBODY AT THE TIME SOUNDED LIKE THIS, AND NOBODY HAS SINCE. SOME OF THE STUFF ON HERE SOUNDS PUNKISH, AS IF THOUGH VIKINGS WERE BOUGHT BACK TO LIFE AND FED A SEX PISTOLS OR MOTORHEAD ALBUM AND GIVEN INSTRUMENTS, AFTER 2 WEEKS WORTH OF LESSONS. VENOM WERE NEVER KNOWN FOR THEIR MUSICIANSHIP, BUT THAT'S OKAY, BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED IT. IF YOU LISTEN TO MOST BANDS TODAY, A LOT OF THEM SOUND OVERPOLISHED. VENOM WERE NOT. IT'S THAT SIMPLE. VENOM WERE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN MOTORHEAD AND METALLICA AT THIS TIME. AND THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE LYRICS IS SET IN HELL BY THE WAY, MUAHAHAHAHAHA! THIS DEMO STARTS OFF WITH A SONG CALLED "REALM OF THE LOST", WHICH HAS A SOMEWHAT PEACEFUL AND MELANCHOLY INTRODUCTION, FULL OF IRON MAIDEN-ISH MELODY, BUT THAT'S ONLY THE INTRO; AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE, THE SONG TAKES OFF IN A BAY AREA-STYLED THRASHING FRENZY, BOUND TO PLEASE THE EARS OF ANY OLD SCHOOL METALLICA FAN. IT SEEMS THAT VOCALIST PATRICK MAUPIN IS REALLY INFLUENCED BY CHUCK BILLY'S (TESTAMENT) VOICE, FROM AROUND "SOULS OF BLACK".

UNLIKE "REALM OF THE LOST", THE SECOND SONG, "LIFEBLOOD" STARTS OUT FAST, GIVING OFF A SIMILAR VIBE TO MEGADETH'S "KILLING IS MY BUSINESS..." ALBUM, BUT SETTLES AT A SLIGHTLY SLOWER PACE (YET STILL THRASH) WITH SOME WICKED-ASS VOCAL LINES. THIS SONG COULD HAVE BEEN AN OUTTAKE FROM "PEACE SELLS..." WHICH REALLY WOWS ME. KADATH ARE DEFINETLY ONE OF THE MOST NON-TRENDY BANDS I'VE HEARD IN MY LIFE. THIS WAS 1996 WHEN HEAVY METAL WAS CLAIMED BY THE GRAVEYARD (I.E.-DEAD!). AND THE ONLY METAL/"METAL" TO BE HEARD THEN WERE BANDS LIKE WHITE ZOMBIE, PRONG, MINISTRY ETC. BUT THIS STUFF IS PURE THRASH! TELL ME THEY'RE POSEURS AND I WILL CALL THE ASYLUM TO TELL THEM TO RESERVE A SPOT FOR YOU.

"EVIL UNBOUND" IS A KIND OF SLOW/MID-PACED THRASH, WITH A VERY EERIE, UPSETTING FEEL TO IT, AGAIN RECALLING THE UNFLUENCE OF EARLY MEGADETH. BUT THERE IS ONE GUITAR LICK - ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THE SONG - THAT SHOWS THE UNFLUENCE OF TONY IOMMI (THE ORIGINAL METAL GOD!). THEN THE SONG PICKS UP PACE, PERVERTING THE MAIN RIFF INTO A SPEEDY FRENZY. THEN IT'S ALL OVER...

"BRAINTRUST" FEATURES A BAD-ASS RIFF IN THE INTRO, AND SOME COMPLEX DAVE MUSTAINE RIFFING. COMPARE ANY RIFF MAUPIN CAME UP WITH ON THIS DEMO, TO ANYTHING MUSTAINE HAS COME UP WITH AFTER "RUST IN PEACE", AND MAUPIN OUT-MUSTAINES MUSTAINE!

"ABUSER" SOUNDS A LITTLE LIKE EARLY DANZIG, AS FAR AS THE MUSIC GOES, AND EVEN THE SOLO IS REMINISCENT OF EX-DANZIG GUITARIST JOHN CHRIST.

"THE HELL BEYOND" STARTS OFF A LITTLE BIT LIKE "REALM OF THE LOST", ONLY THIS TIME I THINK IT'S IN A MAJOR KEY, YET IT STILL SOUNDS SO DAMNED SAD AND DEPRESSING, AND BEAUTIFULLY MELODIC (I, TO THIS DAY, CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE MAJOR KEYS TO SOUND DEPRESSING!) AND IT ALMOST MAKES YOU WANT TO CRY MAN, HEHE. IT'S LIKE SOME SONG OFF OF MERCYFUL FATE'S "MELISSA" ALBUM, BUT I CAN'T RECALL WHICH ONE. WELL, AS YOU CAN GUESS, THIS SONG GETS HEAVY AS HELL AFTER THAT, RESEMBLING EXODUS, 'ALA "BONDED BY BLOOD", AT TIMES.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THIS IS SOME SERIOUS, KICK-ASS THRASH, GUARANTEED TO GIVE YOU A GOOD ASS-POUNDING, THAT HASN'T BEEN DONE QUITE ENOUGH, CONSIDERING THAT MOST THRASH BANDS JUST COPY WHAT SLAYER HAS DONE. OF THE BANDS FEATURED, MOST OF THEM AREN'T REALLY TOO HEAVY. IT'S MOSTLY 70'S STYLED HARD ROCK, LIKE KISS, MORESO THAN HEAVY METAL, BUT THIS GEM DOES HAVE IT'S HEAVY MOMENTS, MOST NOTABLY, TRESPASS' "STORM CHILD". THEY ALSO CONTRIBUTE A SONG CALLED "ONE OF THESE DAYS" WHICH IS A PRETTY GOOD SONG, BUT MORE ROCK THAN METAL.

I THINK DARK STAR SHOULD ALSO HAVE BEEN MORE RECOGNIZED IN THE SCENE, BECAUSE THEIR COMTRIBUTION HERE, "LADY OF MARS" THE BEST SONG ON THIS COMPILATION. IT KIND OF REMINDS ME OF EARLY IRON MAIDEN, AS IN THE FIRST MAIDEN ALBUM.

EAZY MONEY IS A PRETTY GOOD BAND, BUT YOU GET A LITTLE TIRED OF THEIR SONG- "TELEPHONE MAN"- PRETTY FAST.

XERO IS FEATURED HERE WITH "CUTTING LOOSE" WHICH KIND OF REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING SWEET SAVAGE WOULD DO.

SUPRISINGLY, THE WEAKEST SONG ON THIS COMPILATION IS THE ONE BY WHITE SPIRIT ["HIGH UPON HIGH", WHICH CURRENT IRON MAIDEN GUITARIST JANICK GERS CO-WROTE AND PLAYED ON]. IT JUST SOUNDS REALLY HAPPY AND A LITTLE TOO THIN LIZZY-SOUNDING FOR MY TASTES. DON'T GET ME WRONG THOUGH, IT'S A FAIRLY WELL SONG WHEN THE VERSE KICKS IN, BUT THE INTRO JUST SOUNDS SO HAPPY.

THE VOCALIST IN HORSEPOWER KIND OF REMINDS ME OF LED ZEPPELIN'S ROBERT PLANT. "YOU GIVE ME CANDY" IS A PRETTY GOOD, ZEPPELIN-TINGED ROCK SONG WITH A GOOD CHORUS.

RED ALERT IS A GREAT BAND, AND THEIR SONG, "OPEN HEART" IS ONE THAT YOU JUST CAN'T GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD, AND KIND OF HAS A KISS FEEL TO IT. ACTUALLY, IT REMINDS ME OF "SHOUT IT OUT LOUD" DURING THE CHORUS.

SPEAKING OF KISS, THE VOCALIST IN CHEVY ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE PAUL STANELY QUITE A BIT. THE SONG THEY CONTRIBUTE IS CALLED "CHEVY" AS WELL...

THE RAID'S "HARD LINES" STARTS OUT WITH A BASS INTRO THAT MAKES YOU WONDER IF STEVE HARRIS WAS IN THIS BAND. THE VOCALS SORT OF HAVE AN ANGEL WITCH FEEL, LIKE IF KEVIN HEYBOURNE HAD A SLIGHTLY HIGHER VOICE. GREAT SONG THERE AS WELL, PROBABLY ONE OF THE MORE METAL LEANING SONGS, AS I SAID: MOST SONGS LEAD MORE TOWARDS HARD ROCK, BUT THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM.

ALL IN ALL, THIS IS A WORTHY NWOBHM COMPILATION TO BUY. I JUST FEEL THAT SOME HEAVIER ACTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN FEATURED, LIKE ANGEL WITCH, IRON MAIDEN, VENOM, WITCHFINDER GENERAL ETC. SO IF YOU DIG CLASSIC METAL AND HARD ROCK, PUT YOUR MONEY ON THIS ALBUM.

CUTTING EDGE RECORDS BOTH BANDS GIVE YOU 4 FINE EXAMPLES OF THEIR GENRE-DEFYING METAL SOUND. THE FIRST BAND IS DESCEND...

WITH A BACKGROUND OF THE LATE 80'S DEATH METAL SCENE, THAT INFLUENCE SHINES BRIGHTLY THROUGHOUT THIS RECORDING. THERE ARE BASICALLY 2 VOCAL STYLES HERE; ONE BEING DEATH METAL-ISH, MIXING A CHRIS BARNES-STYLED GRUFF WITH THE DEPTH OF TYPE O NEGATIVE'S PETER STEELE-OF ALL PEOPLE-AND THE OTHER VOCAL STYLE BEING VERY BLACK METAL-ISH, RESEMBLING MEZZADURUS OF BLOODSTORM. THE GUITAR-WORK IS ABOVE AVERAGE, COMPARED TO SOME STUFF I'VE HEARD LATELY [COUGH COUGH. MORTICIAN. COUGH COUGH.]. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE GUITARISTS HAVE THE MOST DIVERSE INFLUENCES WITHIN THE BAND. I'VE NOTICED HINTS OF CHUCK SHULDINER'S PLAYING ESPECIALLY ON TRACK 3: "TOUTATIS STRIKES", WHICH IS AN INSTRUMENTAL. THERE IS SOME PASSIONETTE YET HEAVY RIFFING, SORT OF LIKE VENOM'S "SACRIFICE". THERE ALSO SEEMS TO BE A SOMEWHAT BATHORY VIBE WHEN THE SOUND GETS TO BE REALLY RAW. BUT WHEN THE BAND SLOWS DOWN, THEY ALMOST MAINTAIN A SOMEWHAT DOOMY VIBE 'ALA CATHEDRAL. THE LEADS ARE VERY COMPLIMENTARY TO THE SONGS WHICH SHOULD BE THE GOAL OF EVERY LEAD GUITARIST. ACTUALLY THOUGH, THE 2ND LEAD IN "UNSEEN" HAS A VERY FAMILIAR PRESENCE TO IT: THE HANNEMAN/KING WILD WHAMMY BAR STRING JERKER TYPE OF LEAD. THE RHYTHEM SECTION [I.E: DRUMS AND BASS] DOESN'T SOUND SO TIGHT ON THESE RECORDINGS, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS DUE TO THE DEMO QUALITY PRODUCTION.

NOW LET'S GET TO ALL THAT IS EVIL...

THEY SOUND VERY SIMILAR TO DESCEND, IN THE WAY THAT THEY BOTH MIX THE DEATH AND BLACK METAL VOCALS. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2 BANDS IS THAT ALL THAT IS EVIL SOUNDS MORE INFLUENCED GUITAR-WISE BY SLAYER AND DEATH. THERE ISN'T MUCH OF THE STANDARD SLAYER BREAK-NECK SPEED TYPE OF RIFFING, BUT THE INFLUENCE OF THEM IS MORE SUBTLE, SORT OF LIKE IN TERMS OF GETTING PALM-MUTED CRUNCH RIFFS LIKE THE 2ND INTRO TO "SEASONS IN THE ABYSS". THE DRUMMING IS SOMEWHAT LIKE DAVE LOMBARDO'S, HOW HE WOULD STOP DRUMMING FOR A RIFF, THEN JUMP IN AND ACCENT A CERTAIN PART OF THE RIFF. THERE IS SOME SPOKEN-WORD PART IN THE CLOSING SONG, "HER ONLY WISH" WHICH DOESN'T RUIN THE SONG, AS SPOKEN-WORD PARTS USUALLY DO. IT KIND OF FITS. ALSO, IF YOU'RE INTO BILL STEER'S [EX-CARCASS] PLAYING, THE SOLO IN THE AFOREMENTIONED TRACK ECHOES HEAVILY OF HIM.

OVERALL, BOTH BANDS ARE REALLY EXCELLANT AND IT FEELS GOOD TO HAVE A BREATHE OF FRESH AIR. BOTH DESCEND AND ALL THAT IS EVIL SEEM TO HAVE A DIFFERENT APPROACH- AS ULA GEHRET [METAL MANIACS WRITER] SAID-THAN MOST BANDS YOU HEAR TODAY. HOWEVER, IN MY OPINION, I FEEL BOTH BANDS SHOULD THROW IN SOME MORE TEXTURED GUITAR PARTS LIKE HARMONIES AND CLEAN PASSAGES. I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL METAL FANS, ESPECIALLY THOSE INTO EARLY DEATH/BLACK/THRASH METAL. GREAT JOB GUYS!

VOCALIST BIFF BYFORD HAS SUCH A UNIQUE VOICE, I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYONE SOUND LIKE HIM IN MY LIFE. HE HAS A CLEAN VOICE AS MOST H.M. VOCALISTS HAD AT THAT TIME, BUT UNLIKE SOME OF THE OTHERS, HE DOESN'T HIT THEM ANNOYING HIGH FALSETTOS. THE LYRICS ARE DEFINETLY SOMETHING YOU DON'T HEAR TODAY---"YOU CAN BE A SINGER, LIKE ME AND FRONT THE BAND, WHERE ON STAGE WE WAIT AT YOUR COMMAND. DENIM AND LEATHER, BROUGHT US ALL TOGETHER, IT WAS YOU THAT SET THE SPIRIT FREE". THE LEADS ARE PRETTY BLUES-ROCK SOUNDING BUT DON'T REALLY STEP ON IOMMI'S TURF. THE DRUMMING IS PRETTY TYPICAL OF THE TIME, YOU KNOW BEFORE "BLAST BEATS" WERE PLAYED, BUT IT REALLY FITS THE MUSIC PERFECTLY ANYWAY SO WHO CARES?

FOR THOSE OF YOU INTO ONLY "EXTREME" METAL BANDS, THEN GO LISTEN TO YOUR SHIT MORTICIAN ALBUMS, BUT THOSE WHO DO ENJOY CLASSIC HEAVY METAL, THEN THIS IS A MUST-HAVE. BEFORE I GET TO THE ALBUM, I WOULD LIKE TO LET YOU ALL KNOW HOW MY INTEREST IN BLOODSTORM CAME TO BE. IN THE PAST 2-3 YEARS, I HAVE SEEN THEIR NAME MENTIONED VARIOUS TIMES THROUGHOUT METAL MAGAZINES AND FANZINES, AND HAVE SEEN A FEW PICTURES AND INTERVIEWS WITH MEZZADURUS (VOCALIST / GUITARIST, AND ALSO TOURING BASSIST / VOCALIST FOR ABSU).

ON JULY 3RD, 2000, I WAS TOLD BY A GUY NAMED JOHN (WHO IS A FRIEND OF THE BAND) THAT BLOODSTORM AND PERFERSERATH WILL BE JAMMING IN ONE OF THE MEMBERS BACKYARDS, OPEN TO PUBLIC EYES AND EARS, THE NEXT DAY. I WAS TOLD THE ADDRESS AND THE INTERSECTION OF THE HOUSE. THE ADDRESS WAS CORRECT, BUT THE LOCATION OF THE HOUSE WAS TOTALLY OFF! SO WHEN MY GIRLFRIEND (MELANIE), MY ONLINE METAL BUDDY (AL), AND I ALL MET UP THE NEXT DAY TO CHECK OUT THE JAM, WE REALIZED THE LOCATION WAS ABOUT A 20 BLOCK DIFFERENCE TO WHAT I WAS TOLD THE DAY BEFORE!

THE THREE OF US BEGAN THE HIKE THROUGH A BAD NEIGHBORHOOD TO GET TO THE NEIGHBOR- HOOD THEY WERE JAMMING AT. AHHH...HERE I AM...AMIDST THIS HELLACIOUS METALTHAT TASTED SO SWEET TO MY EARS! FIRST THING I SEE UPON TURNNG THAT CORNER WAS THIS MALAKAI-LOOKING DUDE (EVER SEE "CHILDREN OF THE CORN"?) IN A BOLT THROWER SHIRT. THAT HAPPENED TO BE ALEX BOUKS (PERFERSERATH GUITARIST), WHO ALONG WITH MEZZADURUS, FORMED A BAND CALLED GOREAPHOBIA YEARS BEFORE. I LEAN ON THE FENCE RIGHT IN FRONT OF MEZZADURUS AND FRANK GAMBLE, WATCHING THEM RIFF AND POUND AWAY. MEZZADURUS LOOKS UP AND WHILE STILL KEEPING IN TIME , LEANS OVER AND SAYS, "NICE FUCKIN' VENOM SHIRT MAN!", AND IN RESPONSE I SAY, "NICE FUCKIN' BATHORY SHIRT!". HE LAUGHS, NODS, AND CONTINUES PLAYING. BETWEEN SONGS, I TALK TO ALEX, WHO APPROACHES ME SAYING, " HOW THE FUCK OLD ARE YOU, WEARING THAT VENOM SHIRT MAN?". "17", I REPLY, AND HE SAYS "OH WOW! A 17-YEAR-OLD IN A VENOM SHIRT! I GOTTA SHAKE YOUR HAND MAN!". SO I GREET THE THREE AFORE-MENTIONED MUSICIANS AND ALEX CONTINUES TO TALK WITH ME ON HOW HE AND MEZZADURUS (CHRIS, BY THE WAY) STARTED GOREAPHOBIA WAY BACK, AND OF COURSE, I NEVER TALK TO A METALHEAD WITHOUT ASKING- "ARE YOU INTO THE N.W.O.B.H.M.?" HAHA! YEP, THAT'S ME, THE MODERN LARS ULRICH (HEY, LARS AINT BEIN' LARS!).

DURING THE JAM, THERE WERE NO MICROPHONES SEEN, NO BASSIST, AND NO SECOND GUITARIST. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, THE PERFORMANCE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER. THERE WAS ALSO NO CORPSE PAINT ON MEZZADURUS, WHICH IS A RARE SITE.

NOW, LETS COMPARE THIS EVENT TO THE ALBUM WHICH I BOUGHT TWO WEEKS LATER AT ROCK N' ROLL PLUS...

THE LYRICS AND MINDSET OF THE BAND DEALS NOT WITH THE USUAL SATANIC STUFF BLACK METAL BANDS USUALLY DO, BUT WITH MORE MYSTICAL / MYTHOLOGICAL STUFF, WHICH IS A NICE BREAK, COMPARED TO WHAT A LOT OF THE BANDS ARE SAYING NOWADAYS, BUT I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE HELL THE SONGS MEAN AND HOW TO EVEN PRONOUNCE SOME OF THE TITLES ("VOLKRUUN THUUL ZHARUUS"???)! I THINK "YUGGOTHIAN SLAYERS" IS DERIVED FROM H.P. LOVECRAFT STORIES (I WAS JUST FINISHING CHAPTER 8 OF "MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS" BEFORE WRITING THIS). THE PRODUCTION IS THE USUAL BLACK METAL STANDARD: THIN, METALLIC, AND NOISY WHICH CONTRASTED THEIR LIVE SOUND WHERE THE GUITAR SOUNDED BASSIER, FULLER, AND MORE UNDERSTANDABLE. THE SLEEVE SAYS MEZZADURUS DOES GUITAR, BASS, EFFECTS VOCALS AND KEYBOARDS, AND THAT FRANK IS THE DRUMMER. THE VOCALS ARE PRETTY TYPICAL OF BLACK METAL BANDS WHICH FITS THE MUSIC BEST, BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR CRONOS- INFLUENCED VOCALS INSTEAD OF QUORTHON- INFLUENCED VOCALS FOR ONCE! THERE ARE TWO TRACKS WHICH ARE MOSTLY JUST ATMOSPHERIC STUFF LIKE THAT BLACK FUNERAL CD, OR THAT PART ON CELTIC FROSTS CLASSIC, "TO MEGA-THERION".

THE ALBUM COVER IS PERFECT TOO, USING MY FAVORITE COLORS, BLACK AND BLOOD RED (PUN ONLY HALF-INTENDED). IT HAS A PICTURE OF WHAT I ASSUME MUST BE THE STORM WIZARD. AND GET THIS, THE BANDS LOGO IS ACTUALLY READABLE!

THE TWO PHOTOS FEATURED ARE OF MEZZADURUS IN CORPSEPAINT, WHICH I FEEL SHOULD BE LEFT TO KING DIAMOND AND GENE SIMMONS.

BASICALLY, I WOULD ONLY COMPLAIN OF THE PRODUCTION. TO MEZZADURUS, IF YOU ARE READING THIS-MAN, YOU HAVE PLENTY OF STAGE PRESENCE THE WAY I SAW YOU IN PERSON. YOU DONT NEED THE "IMAGE" FOR THAT, YOU ALREADY LOOK METAL AS HELL!

CELTIC FROST ONCE STOOD AT THE BUSY INTERSECTION OF THRASH, DEATH, DOOM, AND BLACK METAL WITH THIS GROUNDBREAKING MID-80'S MASTERPIECE. THIS ALBUM JUST SIMPLY BLOWS MY MIND AND HAS SET THE STANDARD FOR COUNTLESS "DARK METAL" BANDS TO FOLLOW.

BUT HOW DO THEY MOLD ALL 4 SUB-GENRES TOGETHER, YOU ASK? THERE ARE DEFINETLY SOME SPEED-RIFFING ON THIS WHERE IT SOMETIMES HAS AN ALMOST SLAYER FEEL TO IT, YET THE SONGS ARE ALSO VERY SLUDGY AND BLACK SABBATH-DERIVATIVE, AND SOME OF THIS IS DETUNED ("DAWN OF MEGIDDO" IS TUNED DOWN TO C!). THE VOCALS ARE VERY HARSH AND DEATH-Y, YET THEY STAND OUT. THE IMAGE AND ATMOSPHERE OF THE BAND DWELLS IN BLACK METAL, AND THE SONGS HAVE A SOMEWHAT BLACK METAL FEEL TO THEM.

THE SONGS EACH SEEM TO BE A CHAPTER IN A BOOK, SO I GUESS YOU COULD CALL THIS A CONCEPT ALBUM, WHICH IS BY FAR THE BEST CONCEPT ALBUM I'VE HEARD SINCE IRON MAIDEN'S "SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON". I CAN'T EXACTLY UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT TOO WELL BECAUSE OF THE POETIC WAY THE LYRICS ARE DISPLAYED, BUT IT SEEMS THE WORDS DEAL WITH BATTLING AND DETHRONING BEAST-GODS...

BUT DOES THIS ALBUM HAVE VARIETY? ALL THE SONGS ARE IN PRETTY MUCH THE SAME EXACT VEIN, PUT IT THAT WAY. BUT BELIEVE ME, THEY CAN PULL IT OFF 10 TIMES BETTER THAN SLAYER DID WITH "REIGN IN BLOOD"...OR PRETTY MUCH JUST ANY SLAYER ALBUM...

WOW, THIS ALBUM IS DEFINETLY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS I'VE EVER HEARD, AND HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON THE OUTLOOK I HAVE TOWARDS METAL IN GENERAL. I HAVE NOT HEARD ONE BAND THAT SOUNDS LIKE THIS IN ALL MY YEARS OF METAL AND I DON'T THINK I WILL ANY TIME SOON.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, DIAMOND HEAD STARTED IN 1976 IN STOURBRIDGE ENGLAND, AND WERE ONE OF THE LEADING PIONEERS IN THE NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL, AND THIS IS THEIR BEST ALBUM, AND ALMOST ANY OF THEIR FANS WOULD AGREE WITH ME. THE LINE-UP INCLUDES SEAN HARRIS ON VOCALS, BRIAN TATLER ON GUITAR, DUNCAN SCOTT ON DRUMS, AND COLIN KIMBERLY ON BASS.

THIS ALBUM FEATURES REMASTERING ON THESE 7 TRACKS OF HEAVY METAL GLORY. "AM I EVIL?" IS PROBABLY THEIR MOST FAMOUS SONG, PARTICIALLY DUE TO METALLICA COVERING IT AND CONSTANTLY PLAYING IT LIVE, BUT IF YOU COMPARE METALLICA'S TO DIAMOND HEAD'S VERSION, METALLICA'S SOUNDS A LITTLE DRY AND DEAD. THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THIS VERSION THAT IS MORE LIVELY AND MORE MOTIVATED-SOUNDING. THE VOCALS ARE SOMEWHAT INFLUENCED BY ROBERT PLANT, BUT WITH A SMOOTHER, MORE CLASSIC METAL FEEL TO IT THAT YOU GOTTA LOVE. "LIGHTNING TO THE NATIONS" IS A CLASSIC ANTHEM OF BRINGING THE HEAVY METAL HELL TO THE COUNTRIES THEY HAVE TOURED AND HAS TREADED GROUND THAT NO OTHER METAL BAND EVER HAS PRIOR OR SINCE. BUT WITH SOME OF THE SONGS LIKE "HELPLESS" AND "THE PRINCE", YOU CAN SORT OF SEE HOW DIAMOND HEAD'S INFLUENCE TOOK WELL INTO THE THRASH BOOM AND INSPIRED BANDS LIKE METALLICA, MEGADETH, ETC. "SUCKING MY LOVE" AND "SWEET AND INNOCENT" ARE BOTH SORT OF SEDUCTIVE SONGS (AS THE TITLES OBVIOUSLY TELL), AND SEEM TO HAVE A SORT OF DEEP PURPLE INFLUENCE ("BLACK NIGHT" ANYONE?). NOT TO SAY THAT DIAMOND HEAD SOUNDS LIKE ANY OTHER BANDS, JUST THAT THE INFLUENCE SHINES THROUGH. I HAVE TO SAY THOUGH, THE LYRICS TO "IT'S ELECTRIC" ARE PRETTY CHEESY, BEYOND ENJOYMENT. BUT THIS IS A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY REAL METALHEAD, JUST ASK CHRIS, I'M SURE HE WOULD AGREE WITH ME.
