SONIC CIRCLE
Wow......a NJ metal band from at least 2002.......how did I miss this one??? I met bassist Keith from Sonic Circle at my New Jersey Heavy Metal Massacre 1 show. He's a really cool guy, and we've kept in touch ever since. I missed my oppertunity to catch this band live (I had purchased Saw 3 tickets in advance, and Sonic Circle was going to perform shortly after the movie started), and I was pissed about that. Keith was nice enough to introduce me to this music, and after reading this review, I know you'll be compelled to check theses guys out.......

Track Four: Shattered

Clearly, Speed Chamber offers an array of musical diversity to their audience. A stronger bass guitar and drum sound would compliment their aggressive edge. The clean vocals are great……they just need to be incorporated into each song in the proper areas. A bright future lies ahead of this band………they just need a little tweaking.

Sam keeps pounding away at the drums, and Gregg & Rich maintain similar speed through their guitar playing. NIHILIST
Their guitar solos rip and shred, played with heart and skill; Their vocals and bass will demand immediate thrashing and head-banging; Their drumming will make your heart explode out of your chest; ......This is NIHILIST, and their metal will kill you all!!!!!!
Ever since I saw Nihilist live here in New Jersey at the Metal Meltdown (in 2004, I believe), I was hooked. I was so intrigued and interested by them, I HAD to get my hands on their material. I wound up having to call Jack Koshic (the promoter of Metal Meltdown) in order to get information on this band. He gave me a phone number, and before you know it I was talking with Sean, the drummer of this band. Over the years, Sean and I kept
in touch, and he would send me demos and CDs and all this cool material. The problem was, I had no song titles, so I couldn’t properly review anything. Aside from that, it was difficult keeping in contact with Sean, as we had conflicting schedules. A new website design followed, which lead to some myspace pages. I was hearing the songs from the demos again, and this time around I could see which song was which. Going into this review, I knew the following songs as demo versions: Destroyer, Hungry For Blood, Nihilist Kills, and Hessian Mercenary.
Track One: Call Down The Thunder
Track Two: Destroyer
Track Three: American Plague
Track Four: The Assault
Track Five: Hungry For Blood
Track Six: Devastator
Track Seven: Nihilist Kills
Track Eight: Freewheel Burning
Track Nine: Hessian Mercenary
Track Ten: Vengeance Is Mine
After all this time listening to Nihilist and hearing their demos, “Call Down The Thunder” is a great step forward for this ever growing band. What does the future hold for this band?? As far as I can see, nothing but sheer success and total THRASHING DEVASTATION!!!! Perhaps another trip to Jersey so I can see them live again??????????? Raise your horns, bang your heads………NIHILIST KILLS!!!!!

Rendered in Vain
(c) 2006 Independent
Opening with a shit load of double bass drums, Zonaria are obviously set out to make your heart explode out of your chest. Keyboard a-la Dimmu Borgir can be heard here and there, which is nice because in most bands of this genre, the keys drown out EVERYTHING. Such is NOT the case here, as "Rendered..." is a powerful opening song. The vocals are both evil and aggressive at the same time, which keeps this band distinct. Cool stuff!!!
Track Two: Attendin Annihilation
A lot of really cool guitar licks can be heard in this song's first few notes, alongside more double bass drum and killer bass. Thoughts of Death come to mind on this song, as it has that Old-School Death Metal feel to it. The clean vocals chime in, which are nicely placed and not over-used. The little guitar solo, which was a lot of finger tapping, sounded brutal!!!! One cannot help but to go into a head-banging frenzy. The sound effects at the end of the song rocked; I can picture an intense live show with that as the last song, complete with a light show.
Once again, the guitar work here is up to par with all the Sweedish guitar heros. It escapes my mind as to WHY this band does not have a record label behind them. They are easily the next big thing!! Faster guitar in this song keeps a steady pace, and the hints of keyboard are perfect. I am not a big fan of Black Metal, mainly due to the overkill with the keyboards. I am also very picky with Prog, as the Keyboards tend to bore me. There's something about Zonaria that puts them out from the rest, as if they are their own breed of music. Maybe that's why this song is called "Ravage The Breed".

Describing this band’s sound may prove to be a difficult task. Armed with many different influences, Sonic Circle blend just the right elements into their sound that makes a great listening experience. Take the vocal execution of Anthrax (John Bush era) and Alice In Chains with some added aggression, throw in some Jimmi Hendrix and Jazz guitar, and spice up the mix with some aggressive guitar and you’ve got a glimpse of what this band has to offer. I enjoyed the Jazz elements heard in the guitars; it’s got a certain kind of “groove” to it. With the added metal influence, I often caught myself thinking of Joe Satriani. Kudos to guitarists Tom Arrasate and Rolf Fornelius!!!
Leaning towards a more Metal sound, “Joecasino” picks up the pace where “Funk #7” left off. Although I feel some of the rougher vocals could be done without, that edge Sonic Circle gives their music is a nice slap in the face. The drum work here, compliments of Matt Dans, is nicely executed, as the mix really showcases each instrument clearly without overkill. I liked how the pace quickened just before the three-minute mark. It was a cool way to end the song.
More Jazz and Metal intertwined guitar melodies are the greeting notes for “Foul Familiar”. Some palm-muting with groovy wha guitar is a really cool sound. Keeping the vocals at mid pace here, Rolf Fornelius delivers a top-notch performance. The time change after the three-minute mark was a nice twist to the song, as it slows the pace down and gives Rolf a chance to showcase his range.
Track Four: Mr. Turkle
I really liked the way Keith Markussen's bass shines through on this song. The way it gets the pace started in the opening notes of the song is raw! As this song progresses, it shows just how much of a head0banging tune it really is. Complete with an onslaught of pounding, POUNDING drums, chugging guitar, and grasping vocals, "Mr. Turkle" is a winner. The only thing I don't understand is the title.....
The atmosphere build up in this song is very nicely executed. Slow, semi-acoustic guitar with doomy bass lead into a heavier guitar just after the vocals kick in. The second verse reverts back to that atmospheric tone used to open the song. This is a very powerful, deep, and emotional song......and it maintains it's metal elements.
This is one of those songs that really provokes an angy mosh pit........in the beginning, anyway. The sound effects and vocal effects blended into the song are really cool, but I wonder how this works in a live setting. I thought this song would be a bit faster throughout its duration because of its vibe, but it sort of goes back and forth a little. All the musicians worked well here, and I LOVED the chugging guitar and bass, especially all the fast parts but I feel this song could have stayed a little more steady in pace. Parts of this song remind me of Tool's "Prison Sex" song, and I HATE Tool. Another version of this song as a Speed Metal song would be cool to hear.
Semi-Acoustic guitar greets in a light-toned manner for "Song Of Sorrow". The whah and echo used in the guitar was a VERY nice effect, and I also liked the echo in the vocals. Just as sorrow can be both quiet and loud, Sonic Circle reflects on that emotion with their time changes in this song. I didn't like how "Kidz" swayed back and forth; it just didn't seem to work for me. This song, however, tackles a subject matter and paints a great picture with music. Full of emotion and atmosphere, "Song..." is a nice blues/metal song which would be great as a "slow-down" song in a live atmosphere. Nice job!!!
The bass and drum on this song rock! The aggression in this song is off the wall. The angry and soaring vocals, chugging guitar, and thunderous bass and drum are bone crushing!! ............Now this song title makes sence!!!! Get off your ass for this one!!!

(c) 2006 Independent
Fast and heavy guitar greets you with Speed Chamber’s first song “Silence My Enemy”. I can barely make out the drum or bass work in this song; the guitar drowns them both out. From what I could decipher, the drum work seemed pretty good, but needs more volume. The vocal style here, compliments of Dave Incognito, is a mixture of death metal growls and screams along with some clean vocals too. I am reminded of New York’s INVIDIA while hearing this type of music; the heavy and melodic guitar with the Death/Thrash Metal vocals gives another element to the song. The guitar work of Jay Prussack is amazing; he can deliver a fast chugging pace and incorporate assorted riffs and whales in just the right places. Clearly, he is influenced by a lot of Thrash Metal and Melodic Death Metal. As previously mentioned, the bass guitar and drum talents of Dave Currall and Eddy Collado respectively are drowned out. This type of music is only enhanced by a rounded sound with strong bass and drum. Overall, this is a good song, but I feel the clean vocals are a little out of place. Too much switching back and forth makes it feel like switching between radio stations, hearing two different songs. This would have worked in this song if placed in the chorus only. Some spoken word is added to the end of the song, giving it a nice touch compliments of Jon Danzo.
The Thrash Metal guitar attack continues in “Second Skin”. A more rounded song, “Second…” offers a prevalent guitar sound throughout it’s duration. The vocals are kept at a mid-range Thrash Metal Scream, with added Death Metal roars. This is an excellent combination of brutal metal domination!!! The guitar playing quickens about half way through the song with added licks. Some Black Sabbath influence can be heard in the guitar playing here (just quicker). Sadly, the drum and bass are drowned again.
Track Three: Pain Lies Beneath
Jay’s guitar talents are really displayed here, with the incorporation of heavy melodic riffs, chugging, and sound effects with palm muting. The vocal execution is used intelligently, as the clean vocals are used in the right spots. A live performance with some flashing lights would fucking rule! This song is hell bent on annihilation……a true horn-raiser!!!!
With the sound effect of glass being shattered, Speed Chamber takes you on another turbo-charged ride of evil. Once again, the guitar work here is fast, melodic, and brutal!!! This is a head-banging masterpiece….this riff HAS to be heard!!!! The vocals come off strong and aggressive, and the clean parts fit nicely. Turn up the drum and bass, and this would be perfect. In any case, CRANK the volume on this one, and raise the fist of metal.
Semi acoustic guitar with clean vocals opens what I thought was going to be a ballad. The veil of deception is removed as the distortion kicks in almost instantly with an evil roar/scream. The ENTIRE mood/direction of this song dramatically shifted. I really feel this type of change should not have been so instant. Aside from that, this song has a really dark edge to it, incorporating down-tuned guitar and Death Metal growls. The song ends with more pace changes and different styles of vocal execution.
Horror Fire
(c) 2006 Motor City Metal - Independent
This is quite and impressive opening for Halloween’s long awaited new album. Stamped with the signature Halloween brand of atmospheric background music, horror theme, and a backwards message at the end of the track, “I Am” is the much anticipated gateway drug of Halloween’s seductive lure. This spoken-word intro is the perfect mood setter. Try not to listen to the rest of the album after hearing this……I DARE YOU!!!!
The sounds of someone snoring along with a ticking clock lead into Brian Thomas’ “horror scream” (as I am calling it). Donny Allan’s slow guitar sets a horror movie type vibe. George Neil’s bass playing crushes the bone, opening with his vibrations of doom accompanied by Rob Brug’s nicely placed drum. The pace quickens, with that distinct Halloween chugging rhythm and added melody. Delight to the ears, Mr. Thomas hits those long awaited new high notes I have yearned to hear for so long, as heard in the chorus.. Once again, Halloween show how their brand of metal is so distinct and can grow & develop over time, yet maintain the roots of their sound. The heavy and melodic guitar & the solos at the near five-minute mark are fist-pumping surges of metal!!!! This first new song kicked my ass…….I listened to it about six or seven times before going onto the next track.
That familiar Halloween sing-along type of song can be found in “Halloween Night”. Reminiscent of the band’s Victims of the Night era, this song features all the guitar, bass, and blasting drum you can come to expect from this band. Brian’s vocals maintain the high range, and he adds an edge of evil and cynical dimension to his performance. This song is sure to be another Halloween classic!!!!
Some beautiful guitar melodies and keyboard open what I thought would be a ballad. However, Halloween adds their metal twist, immediately displacing a comforting feeling with some heavy chugging guitar. The chorus displays a hint of the powerful range Brian has. Once more, the bass and drum amplify the overall heaviness of the song, clearly showing how George and Rob are a strong backbone of the band. Donny’s unique guitar sound once again puts the final Halloween stamp on this song.
A chilling song dealing with an unrecognized, lost person (both the physical aspect and the soul), “Exist” delivers an emotional punch. Put yourself in another person’s shoes and strive to “Exist”. Slow in pace, this song is one of Halloween’s darker songs, complete with some atmospheric keyboards.
Another head-banging classic, “Candles” is sure to be a fan favorite. Complete with fast, melodic guitar and amazing drum & bass, this song has it all. Indeed, a sing-along classic, “Candles” is a top notch Old-School Power Metal song, reminiscent of the Don’t Metal With Evil era!! Brian maintains a high vocal range, and Donny lights his fret board on fire with his guitar playing!! I additionally enjoyed how the drums sounded in this song. Normally, with these kinds of songs, the guitar overpowers the drum work. This is NOT the case here, as the drum is clear and pounds right into your chest!!!
Some pretty haunting whispers open “The Seer”, which lead into a heavy and melodic guitar riff. Rob’s drum work is reminiscent of Judas Priest’s Painkiller album…..I swear, he’s fucking awesome!!! Another dark song offered up, Halloween have been consistent with their balance of song material here. Donny’s guitar work shreds once more, right along with George’s bass. This is a good, heavy song.
A strange introduction opens this track, which at first reminded me of Accept’s “Fast as a Shark”, but then revealed it’s horror influence. The evil whispers of a madman speak of his horrible plans, while a gun is being fired off. A woman’s scream ends this eerie introduction, as the next song plays…….
Another top song for me, “Nobody Home” is full of memorable power chords, fist-pumping lyrics, and shredding guitar licks. The bass in this song is fucking killer……..it’s both strong and powerful!!! Added wickedness comes from Rob’s crazy drum work here……he is a DRUM MACHINE!!! The theme of this song’s lyrics reminds me of the movie “Amittyville Horror”.
They were murdered in their beds.
Hear the sounds screaming out
They won’t be coming out……tonight………There’s nobody home.
Track Ten: Rage
This opens with a brutal onslaught of double bass drum with heavy chugging guitar. Another dark song, “Rage” is complete with aggressive vocals, heavy guitar and bass, fast drum, and nicely placed guitar licks. Get up and kill something!!!! This song really gets the adrenaline pumping! Whatcha gonna do when YOU feel rage?!?!
Like a bat out of hell, Donny’s guitars start up the opening riffs of “Ways Of Man”. A persistent guitar melody keeps the pace of this song going strong. The drum and bass work are once again heavy and powerful; this song sees Brian’s vocals at a mid-range level and aggressive.
AAHHH…….that old-school Halloween sound shines through here with Brian’s vocal screams. The guitar melodies are gritty throughout, with added licks for that nice well-rounded sound. The double bass drum and bass give a thunderous vibe to the backbone of this song. This song provokes serious head-banging…….against a wall.
Complete with a great vibe and sing along lyrics, “Coming To Life” has a lot of great elements that make a fantastic song. Chugging guitar, pounding bass, double bass drum, and the haunting screams and howls heard in the vocals are all the ingredients that make this a recipe for greatness.
This is a simple into to the next song. It sets the atmosphere with some sound effects, semi-acoustic guitar, and haunting bass.
Once more, a gritty bass line dominates this KILLER cover of Alice Cooper’s “Go To Hell”. Halloween has taken this song and made it their own! PERIOD. This is a MUST LISTEN.
Some crazy hollow sounding drum opens the first part of this song, complete with a siren sound effect. An AWESOME guitar melody leads into the demanding and aggressive vocals. This song is another head banging masterpiece. The vocals range from aggressive to screaming high range madness. This song has been on the vault for some time now, and I’m glad it has seen the light of day. Originally intended to be the title of this album, “Fire Still Burns” is an awesome tune, and I’m glade to finally hear it on CD. Check it out, and see how the fire still burns for Halloween.
Another fast-paced song, “The Battle” deals with exactly what you think: fighting……fighting for what’s right, and fighting for your freedom. Some reminiscent Victims Of The Night guitar melodies are heard here, and the overall song flows very nicely. This is good driving music……just don’t let the adrenaline take you over!!
Could this be a ballad?? Some very emotional guitar sets off the opening notes to this song, complete with acoustic guitar and complimenting guitar solos. The heavy distortion kicks in, and chugging guitar starts to change everything. This leads into a GREAT guitar lick that remains dominate throughout the song. A song filled with anger, emotion, and power, “Fighting Words” has all the working cogs of the metal machine known as Halloween. Double bass drum, whaling guitar, pounding bass, and demanding vocals kick your ass.
“Happy Fucking Birthday To You” is absolutely hilarious. As stated in the album, “The voices in your head are throwing a party”…….Sure to put a smile on ANYONE’S face.
Lost In The Shadows
(c) 2006 Independent
Heavy guitar is a key element in this opening intro for Beyond Fallen’s “Lost In The Shadows” album. Very melodic guitar chimes in, in vein of Iron Maiden. The drum and bass REALLY shine through here, showcasing power and heaviness. This little interlude leads right into the next song.
Continuing with the melodies of it’s intro, “Lost In The Shadows” is the revealing point for Beyond Fallen. As the vocals chime in, I can only say that this album will continually grasp my attention. Power, melody, and head-banging madness reign supreme. Joe Karavis’ vocals can be compared to the likes of Agent Steel meets Abattoir. Blending elements of Power Metal and Thrash Metal, guitarists Steve Jasvilewicz and Mike Johnson are an awesome force. The bass and drum of Chuck Donahue and Tom Carden respectively are just crushing. The mix here is perfect. So far, so good…………
A heavy Thrash Metal riff with some ferocious drum opens “Concrete Lucifer”. This is the type of song that provokes a mosh pit and/or crazy fist pumping/head banging. The distorted vocals in the verses give this song a raw edge, adding to the already dominating aggression being exerted. A lot of the drum work reminds me of Judas Priest’s “Painkiller”. The guitar solos are real screaming shredders!!! The evil laugh at the end of the song is a nice touch.
Semi-acoustic guitar plays a lead role here, accompanied by some occasional chugging guitar. The pace picks up and gets heavier, reminiscent of Angel Dust’s Enlighten The Darkness album (think Bernd’s guitar work). The chorus reminds me of Vicious Rumor’s “Digital Dictator” song, incorporating the entire band to sing along (another strong Thrash Metal element here). The time change after the three-minute mark has a cool bass interlude with some great melodic guitar a-la Iron Maiden. A full showcase of talent is evident here.
Track Five: Bringing Out The Dead
The Thrash Metal riffing continues with a full speed assault in “Bringing Out The Dead”. As I have come to expect at this point, superior guitar riffs and aggressive vocals are the working cogs in this metal machine. The drum work once more is a heart pounding frenzy that is absent in most unsigned bands. This song would have been nice for the remake of “Dawn Of The Dead”.
An absolutely KILLER guitar riff opens “Mask Of Deception”, which is accompanied by some CRAZY drum and bass. This is yet another head-banging anthem that CANNOT be resisted. The time change, with guitar solos, in the middle of the song are very reminiscent of German Thrash Metal in vein of Kreator or Destruction. . Be warned: the paralyzed will get moving to this!!!!!!
The riffing madness continues with “Fuel The Fire”. As if the adrenaline rush wasn’t enough in “Mask…”, “Fuel…” just keeps the fury going. Joe’s vocals are showcased here, as his execution is delivered with great range. The chorus is another sing-along, which is VERY influenced by Old School Thrash Metal (think Atrophy). Blistering guitar solos with thunder-like drums just add to the greatness of this song. The double bass drum heard at the end of the song is fucking brilliant!!! The fire is definitely fueled here……to bonfire status!!!!!!!
Another great riff opens this track, which reminds me of NIHILIST’s “Hell’s Son”. Blast beats and pounding bass keep a great rhythm section, as the guitars shine through repeating this awesome riff. Higher vocal ranges are reached here, as Joe really shows his diversity as a vocalist. Demanding and wicked vocal lines are key elements in this song’s greatness, which goes along perfectly with the mood set by the guitars. The time-change near the three-minute mark is awesome, as the drums continue to shine through. “Chasing Infinity” is another scorcher!!!!
Semi-Acoustic guitar with mid-paced drum sets a somewhat sad mood for “A Stranger’s Stare”. Eventually, the heaviness increases, yet the song maintains it’s gloomy feel. The chorus is another sing along; I can imagine Beyond Fallen’s audience singing along with this one for sure. The guitar solo at the three-minute mark is amazing. Elements of both Power Metal and Thrash Metal shine through once again. A slower-paced song, “A Stranger’s Stare” never dulls out or looses the attention the rest of this album has captured. This song would be great with a light show.
As usual, an AMAZING guitar riff opens this final song, “The Rise Of The Fallen”. The drum and bass remain as a strong backbone (thanks to Tom and Chuck respectively), particularly noting the constant double bass throughout this song. Some great lead guitar chimes in, and then the vocals add to the intensity. This song has a lot of power and aggression, and Joe’s vocals REALLY come through here. Once again, his range is showcased, as well as the diversity of the guitar playing from Steve and Mike. The solos here are just amazing. The Thrash Metal riffs provoke the dead to wake and head bang. Rounding this album out, “The Rise….” Is a GREAT way to close this album and leave you anticipating what the next release from this phenomenal band shall have to offer.
Volume One
(c) 2005 Independent
Some synth and keyboard are the gateway hooks for OLD SEASON’s opening track. Some emotional guitar enhances the vibe, which leads into some nice solos. Imagine taking the passion from Paradise Lost, the atmosphere from Angel Dust, and the melody from Iron Maiden, and you’ve got one of Ireland’s best metal band’s in some time!!! The guitar solo right before the time change at the near four-minute mark is KILLER, and the vocals really begin to soar. Clearly, this band has an array of talent, which is only evident in this song. Listening to his song is a pure experience of imagery and emotion, painted by each respective musician. Nearing seven minutes in length, “And Sands…” surely doesn’t seem all that long, and is a very interesting first song. I am already hooked!!!!
Picking up the pace a bit, “Mortals…” opens with a great guitar riff that remains repetitive throughout the song. The keyboards add just the right touch of atmosphere to the song, without giving it a dull or boring sound. Once again, a great vocal range can be heard here, at times reminding me of Bruce Dickenson. This song really reminds me of something Angel Dust would have released from their “Enlighten The Darkness” era. The guitar riffs and incredible drum work near the five minute mark are amazing; some pure head banging madness is felt there!! Emotional and heavy/melodic guitars once again show relevance in this song. I would like to see a live performance of this song, complete with flashing lights in time with the keyboard and melodies………it would look AMAZING!!!
Track Three: The Claw
Continuing with some fast paced metal, “The Claw” has another noticeable opening guitar riff, which leads into a AMAZING melody. Hints of Iron Maiden, Helloween, and old Helstar come to mind here. The duel guitar work is stunning!!! Chugging guitar work accompanies the devastating vocals heard here, executed with sheer power!!! More guitar licks and melodies only enhance this already amazing song. A true metal anthem to crank the volume to, “The Claw” will get you!!!!! (and, just to note, this is my favorite song on this album!!!!)
The roller coaster ride slows down, as OLD SEASON takes the pace down a bit in “A Divine Plague”. Just as I have seen throughout this album (but neglected to mention), the lyrics are both intellectual and fascinating. Perhaps some may want to call this “Thinking Man’s Metal”, but a lot of that tends to be boring. This is FAR FROM boring. The time change near the three-minute mark really gets the pace going. Another killer guitar riff demands perked ears and banging heads, just as I have come to expect now. The closing bass and drum work are heart pounding, kind of like how “Painkiller” opens. “A Divine….” Is yet another epic winner.
Semi-acoustic guitar and keyboard give a little intro to the unexpected heavy guitar riffs that open “”The Sky Burns”. This song is much faster in pace than the other songs on the album, in both guitar work and furious drumming. Giving Dave Murray and Adrian Smith a run for their money, OLD SEASON execute twin guitar lead after twin guitar lead with perfection. Noting my ATTACKER “The Unknown” review, an OLD SEASON and ATTACKER show would have more guitar leads than anyone could handle!!! That would be something!!!
That familiar guitar lead welcomes you in the opening notes of “A Dwindling Seed”. A nod to the underground, I hear some similarities in this riff as compared to Phoenix Reign’s “Another Night Alone”. Anyone from this region will be familiar with that comparison; however for those who are not: imagine Iron Maiden’s Transylvania taken up a step. Some added chugging and atmospheric keyboard keep the rhythm heavy and emotional. The time change after the two-minute mark incorporates some great keys and melodic guitar leads. This is the kind of music that you can get lost in; it paints so many pictures in your mind, and never looses it’s spark.
Corrosive
(c) 2006 KR Records
Blending elements of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, “Superhero” is a breath of pure, fresh air. Imagine a more melodic Motley Crue with a touch of Rough Silk or Angel Dust (minus the keyboards), and you’ve got the majestic sounding BLISSED. Hints of Motley Crue’s “Afraid” come to mind. The guitar solo is a pure soaring rock lick with added emotion, and the rhythm is mid-paced. The drum and bass work very well together here, maintaining a strong backbone for the song compliments of Nathan Kojak and Geoff Breen respectively.
Keeping the pace going, “Monster” opens with some foot-stomping guitar. The vocals chime in with added power and aggression; some hints of early Halloween come to mind here. Some added higher singing adds a nice touch to the song, showcasing vocalist David Pearson’s range. Along side his additional guitar playing is the duel work of guitarist Jeff Miller. These two compliment each other well. I have to say: as this album continues to play, a certain magic reveals itself. Beside from the obvious talent this band has, I begin to enjoy this MORE and MORE………this is GREAT STUFF!!!
Slowing the pace down a bit is a little interlude called “Decision”. Slow acoustic guitar and bass create a gloomy, sad feeling here. With that in mind, I must say that this is a cleaver way to set the mood for the next song, particularly noticing the subject matter involved.
Before even listening to this song, I reminisced on the mood set forth by “Decision” and went into this song with that in mind. Piercing the heart and soul, “Betrayal” is a whirlwind of emotion and tension, enhanced by aggression and power. If you’ve EVER felt betrayal in your life, THIS is the song to listen to. Blissed have “hit the nail on the head” with this song.
The title track of this album reminds me of “Mr Crowley” from Ozzy, with its opening guitar notes. The chorus is a cool sing-along melody without all the happy dragon crap found in most generic Power Metal songs; this chorus is pure power and has a nice hard edge to it!
Track Six: Run
A soft ballad with a pointed edge is heard in “Run”. Covering lyrical subject matter based on family life and abandonment, “Run” is a realistic grasp on life that shakes and moves you. If you’ve ever felt doubt or fear, this song pin-points those feeling perfectly, with some outstanding guitar work that literally hits a nerve. The fading keyboard work is a nice touch at the end of the song.
Picking up the pace again, the upbeat “With You” has elements of power, passion, and emotion. Soaring vocals, heavy guitar, and deep lyrics are the ingredients to this concoction of musical bliss (no pun intended). From chugging guitar to slower melodies, “With You” is a roller coaster ride which must be heard.
Balls-out, gritty guitar opens this track, which leads into some great foot-stomping melodies. Continuing with an array of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, “Get Up” is one of those song that gets you off your ass and moving (just look at the song title)!!!! The time change with the guitar solo towards the end of he song is awesome. This is a great song to get any crowd energized and participating with some singing-along.
Some gritty/heavy guitar work and evil vocals are the core elements to “Rise”. Complete with a sing-along chorus, this song keeps it simple in a bold way. The melodies are good, and the drum and bass maintain a solid heavy beat.
With a more upbeat guitar sound, “Getting Better” keeps the pace strong. Just as I have seen throughout this album, the chorus is another winner!!! The guitars are great, keeping a nice sounding melody throughout the song. The vocals once more push the limit, showcasing talent and range. This is a feel-good song with some great soaring vocals and fantastic guitar shredding! A nice scream at the end of the song would have been the proverbial “Icing On The Cake”. Sadly, the song ends without it (must not be Blissed’s style as that would be incorporated in Heavy Metal songs, rather than Heavy Hard Rock).
Mood-setting acoustic guitar opens “Bittersweet”. Vocalist David Pearson REALLY shines here, showcasing his phenomenal range. Most people have gone through some kind of tough decision in life, whether it’s related to a relationship or something else. “Bittersweet” is a haunting look at a life altering decision for a relationship. This can be related to in many ways, as the lyrics are left a bit open-ended, adding a dimension to the song that caters to everyone.
Finally, those screams I’ve been waiting to hear!!!! Some simple reprising to “Monster”, “Reprise” brings this album full circle. This is a cleaver way to end the album; I’m assuming this song is NOT performed live, as it would have no particular purpose in a live setting.
The Unknown
(c) 2006 Sentinel Steel Records
Attacker waists NO time getting right to the point here. Fast, furious, and heavy guitar
assault your ears with the opening notes of this song. The drums are fast as hell, thanks to Mike
Sabatini, and the bass is tweeked nicely, thanks to Lou Ciarlo! Bob Mitchell's vocals are high
and evil sounding.....it is simply mind-blowing. Mike Benetatos and Pat Marinelli compliment
each other's guitar playing nicely. Their duel leads and licks are a driving force in this song.
"This is POWER" is the chorus, which is sung with a lot of aggression. This was a nice kick in
the ass for a first song. More, please.........
Yet again, the metal madness continues. This stuff borders on Power Thrash Speed Metal.
Mitchell's vocals seemed a little on the UDO side for this song, reminding me of his previous
work in VYNDYKATOR. The chorus is both catchy and a sure crowd sing-along. Some Halford screams
are thrown in, adding to the power of this song. The guitar work is gripping and simply amazing!
The time change at the three-minute-mark works well; I liked the short bass solo that lead to the
continued guitar assault. This song is sure to set your speakers on fire!
This song easily has to be my favorite track on this album. The opening lead guitar and drum
are brutal!! Heavy and melodic guitar a la Iron Maiden really plays a big part here. When the
first verse approaches, the speed is maintained, and the vocals are executed with power and
terrific range. The evil, demonic vocals incorperated in the chorus are fucking brilliant! This
gives the song another dimension, and works VERY nicely. This song demands fist-pumping, head
banging madness! The guitar solos near the three-minute-mark are amazing (as I have now come
to expect). This song mainly deals with perhapse a wearwolf or vampire...I'm not sure which one,
but the lyrics are amazing, and this song overall kicks ass.
Track Four: The Unknown
The anticipated title track of this new Attacker album leaves me in awe! The chorus is a great
sing-along, and the guitar work remains super melodic and heavy. The time change just past the
three-minute-mark reminds me of something I'd hear off a SLEEPY HOLLOW album. Clearly, this song
signifies the presense of Old School Metal.....both alive and well. Just as before, Sabatini's
drums are off the hook. I found myself glaring at the album cover's artwork while listening to
this song, and hands down ATTACKER have their shit down to perfection. I often find myself wondering
why such a simple concept has escaped most other bands: an album cover that makes sense, AND the
title track is clearly portrayed through the artwork. ATTACKER have clearly accomplished this.
It has become evident to me that each song on this album will open with some amazing guitar riff,
backed by a tight backbone of fast drum and bass. Absolute power can be heard when Bob launches
into the chorus, "Crush the spine / Nail it down!". He really showcases his range here......absolutley
amazing! Power, melody, and range.....ATTACKER have "Nailed it Down"!
I remember hearing this song for the first time live at the record release party on Saturday, April
29, 2006. It was FUCKING AWESOME, and it sounds exacly the same here. The chorus grabs you by the
throat and does NOT let go! Guitar work here is amazing; the solos near the three-minute-mark are
jaw-droping. Simply put, this song rocks!
Some flang guitar leads into the first riffs and verse of this sing along song. Once more,
the guitar work leave me in absolute awe of Pat and Mike's talent. I am reminded of old
Sleepy Hollow and Helstar. Things really pick up at the two-minute mark. If, at least, your foot
isn't stomping to the beat right now, then you are deaf. Amazing drum and bass backbone add to
the complexity of this song. Hands down, this is another winner.
Mike Sabatini's "War Drums" and Lou Ciarlo's "Doom Bass", as I shall call them for this song, opens
"Devils War". Atmospheric, slow guitar leads into some melodic guitar (which has such a KILLER guitar riff!), then picks up the pace as the
vocals chime in. Clocking in at the near seven-minute mark, this is yet another epic Attacker
song (remember "Desecrate"??). The chorus is awesome: "Fight like the Devil / No one shall be
spared / Fight like the Devil / No life shall be spared" Mr. Mitchell sings with amazing power
here! Continued guitar assaulting closes out the song.
This song has a great chugging guitar melody (which remains heavy), and pounding drums. A good song
indeed, I have to admit that I didn't like this song at first. However, when I heard that guitar solo
inbetween verses, I was hooked. This song yells "PARTY", and the listener must heed the call. Go ape-shit,
punch your ex-girlfriend (or boyfriend for you gals!), and remember all the times YOU had "Brain Shake".
Brilliantly executed, "Brain Shake" is an unforgettable ballad......Attacker style!!!!
This song is actually an intro to the next song, but for all the forty seconds it lasts, I must
say that this is VERY impressive. Haunting guitar and bass......that's all I will say. Words alone
cannot justify the VIBE you FEEL when hearing this little intro!!!
Amazing guitar riffs open this closing track, and what a way to go out!!! This song is yet another
skull crusher! "Raging out of control / Cross the bridge / Pay your last toll / Death is truest of all
/ Promises rise and fall" Shit.....clearly Attacker have not only come back, but they've come back
with FORCE! Conclusively, Soul Taker was NOT a one-off album deal......this is the REAL deal here!
If this keeps up, imagine what the next album will hold??............
Broken EP/Single
© 2005/2006 Mastermind
(Independent Release)
It’s nice to finally hear some new Mastermind tunes; it’s only been a few thousand years….LOL!! The opening track for this new gem is “Broken”, which is also the single for Mastermind’s upcoming album Insomnia (due soon in 2006). Vocalist Tracy McShane and guitarist Bill Berends start off this song with a nice little duet of “Na na na, na na na, na na na..na…..”. Some atmospheric synth adds to the presence of this song with some heavy chugging guitar. Afterwards, some smooth, melodic guitar opens the first verse. I really enjoyed the total feel of this song: it’s both smooth and powerful at the same time. Tracy really shows her high range off here, with both power and beauty. She has crafted her vocals, making her an essential and distinct sound of the band. Rich Berends’ drumming really shines through, keeping a nice pace & good beat. I really couldn’t make out too much bass; it seemed almost drowned in the guitars. Nonetheless, this song is a GREAT opening tune, and a most welcomed return of Mastermind. Onto the next track!!!
Laura Johnson’s pulsating bass opens this track, which immediately flows into heavy distorted guitar. Tracy’s vocals chime in instantly; some keyboard adds atmosphere. At times, the vocals are evil and haunting, yet they are also melodic and beautiful at times too. This creates a nice yin-yang of emotion and balance with raw power. Some hints of Evanesance shine through. I wonder why “Break Me Down” is the B-Side of this release……it’s a great song, and should be included in the forthcoming Mastermind album. Nonetheless, it rocks.
After seeing Mastermind live a few times, I’ve noticed that they cover a broad range of songs. Included in their live performances is usually a cover song or two, being A Perfect Circle or some
other band. It was only inevitable that “Weak and Powerless” be included on this EP. I am not familiar with A Perfect Circle, so I cannot compare the two versions. However, I can tell you that from my perspective, hearing this song for the first time (as if it were an original Mastermind song), this song rocks! I loved Laura’s bass into, and Tracy sings gracefully. I can almost hear the Tool element shine through, as it might in the original song. Bill’s guitar playing is melodic, smooth, and has a touch of blues to it. The way Bill and Tracy sing together is great, as their voices compliment each other’s well. After hearing the Mastermind version of this song, I am anxious to hear the original. Bravo!!!
Originally released on the “Angels of the Apocalypse” album, “The Queen of Sheba” finds itself an uplifting makeover. Tracy sings with spine-tingling beauty; she fucking rules!!!! Some added vocal harmonies give thing song a nice touch, along with the additional guitar solos (which kick serious ass). I noticed Rich’s drumming was a lot faster in this version than on the original (this is a good thing). This song has been reinvented in a great way. What else can I say??……check it out!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting Mr. Bill Berends. “William Tell Overture” has been taken from it’s original form and performed on guitar. I almost imagined Yngwie Malmstein playing here, yet it was indeed Mr. Berends. Fast, furious, and neo-classical axemanship here……..the fret board has been lit on fire. Hail Bill!!!!! Check this out, and look for it’s live performance!!!
Originally released on the “Angels of the Apocalypse” album, “A Million Miles Away” showcases Tracy’s attempt to perform this song. There are some differences between the two, as I will elaborate on. Tracy’s predecessor, Lisa Bochelli, sang the original version of this song. Tracy adds her own personal style to this song, while maintaining the songs original sound. I remember the guitar work being a little heavier, but this is a “live” recording, so perhaps that was just a recording enhancement. I have to be completely honest here: I like the original version better, but I certainly do not want to take anything away from this version. The way I see it, this song is now Tracy’s song, and that makes it a new song, NOT a re-recorded version of an old Mastermind song. Clearly, this song was written for a female vocalist, and it’s a good thing Tracy is part of the band, otherwise this song wouldn’t work. I have heard this song performed live right in front of me, and let me tell you: it kicks ass. Tracy does not need to prove anything here; she nailed this song (and always did). It was nice hearing another “Angels…” song with Tracy on vocals.
Originally recorded by Skip James, “I’m So Glad” is mysteriously covered here. I am not familiar with this song, so I know nothing about it, and cannot compare this version with the original version. I enjoyed the guitar solo after the two-minute mark, but overall I found this song out of place and odd. More research on my end is needed for appreciation here, so I cannot form a proper opinion. This is obviously the side of Mastermind that makes them so diverse.
The same greatness found in the first version, only a bit longer………what more could you ask for?
The Silvery Image
© 2005 Suspyre Music
(Independent Release)
Huge, bombastic orchestration complimented with female angelic voices and male soprano backing vocals are the ingredients to the opening track of Suspyre’s debut album, “The Silvery Image”. Recollections of Blind Guardian, Helloween, and Symphony X immediately reveal themselves. Indeed, this is a very impressive opening arrangement for this New Jersey based band (and a great first impression in just under one-minute!).
“Sospirare” leads right into this song, which unleashes the inevitable talent this band has. Guitar melodies a-la Helloween and Blind Guardian shine through; plenty of palm-muting and chugging with added licks and solos kick off a very European Power Metal feel to this song. Vocalist Clay Barton sounds like a cross between Tobias of Edguy and Timo from Stratovarius. The song arrangements flow smoothly and gracefully. Clearly, this is a band compromised of talented and/or seasoned musicians. Guitarists Gregg Rossetti and Rich Skibinsky compliment each other well, as heard in their duel leads and harmonies. Drummer Sam Paulicelli uses a lot of double bass drum, and keeps the pace fast as well. Kirk Schwenkler’s bass is played tightly with the drumming. Added keyboards in just the right spots add a nice prog element, compliments of Rich. What a musical kick in the ass!!!!!
Some synth and keyboard opens “Distant Skies”, which paints me a picture right out of the imagery seen in “The Neverending Story”. Clay’s vocals come off powerful and melodic; clearly he has an impressive range. The lyrics can be both dark and beautyful, which compliments this music very well.
The illusions of my madness eased the pain
Tonight the chorals rest upon my feet
And their melodies are running through my veins
Some Stratovarius influence with some added drama opens “Water Burns”. The way the rest of the instruments chime in is both smooth and brilliant. This song is both powerful and emotional. The guitar licks and drums compliment the vocals nicely; if you’re not at least tapping your foot to the beat, then you’re deaf. The time change near the three-minute mark grasps your soul with emotion and mystique. I can picture a live version of this song, complete with a light show. The keyboard work is beautiful and fits perfectly with the song’s theme. The guitar solos fucking rule, complimented with some very fast rhythm guitar chugging and fast bass/drum. This song destroys!!!!!
Track Five: The Breath of Gloria
Emotional and haunting piano opens “The Breath of Gloria”. Some orchestration and saxophone chime in nicely. Showing their softer side, Suspyre nails this ballad with both emotion and skill. At first, I was weary that this song would be boring, but it simply built up a very heart-felt climax. The added female vocals give the song added dimension, while each musician keeps their playing set to the mood of the song.
More Power Metal chugging with keyboard is heard on the first notes of “Last of the Survivors”. Complete with a big sing-along chorus, soaring vocals, and lots of backing vocals, this song raises the bar on vocal technique. The drums continue their double bass/turbo fast assault, the guitars are very melodic, and everything about this song screams “Tight Musicianship!!”. This one’s destined to become a Power/Prog Metal anthem.
Serving as an introduction to the next song, “Ascension” has the same bombastic and dramatic feel as “Sospirare” does. This is cool stuff!
This song’s beginning was a continuous flow from it’s introduction, “Ascension”. The same mood is maintained, complete with some drum. Some guitar melodies add to the atmosphere of this song, which sound a bit on the Dream Theater side. Complete with heavy & fast guitar, feast drums, and both soaring and aggressive vocals, “Apex” is a metal monster!!! I also loved Clay’s scream right before the time change at the four-minute mark. Upbeat, fast, and awesome can describe this song in a nutshell.
This song picks up right where “Apex” left off. It flows smoothly and majestically. Some guitar “screams” a-la Angel Dust are executed during this song’s atmospheric introduction. The guitar work is extremely melodic and simply kicks ass. More complimenting aggressive vocals are thrown in with the already melodic, soaring vocals. This adds a great element to this song’s dark subject matter. The keyboard work is fast and fits perfectly with this songs changing moods (slow, fast, emotional, and furious). Once more, a great scream is executed at the end of this song.
Wasting NO time, this song opens with a fast, metal assault. Killer drum and guitar work compliment each other, played both fast and melodic respectively. This is a high-energy song, as the vocals chime in after this great opening, continuing the ferocious metal onslaught with aggression and power. A true head-banging, fist pumping scorcher.
Once again, this song picks up right where it’s predecessor left off. The same musicianship shines through; nothing can be said which hasn’t already been said. The chorus is another big sing-along winner, complete with killer melodic guitar work. It seems that this album jut keeps getting better and better!!!
The final track, “Seguirai” is an interesting closer. In the same way “Sospiare” enticed and enthralled, “Seguirai” continues in the same manner. The quick dramatic and bombastic orchestration brings this album full circle. The musical journey is over…..too bad!!!!
Call Down The Thunder
© 2006 Nihilist Metal Records
(Independent Release)
The cover art has a pretty bad-ass looking skull with long hair and an eye-patch. It’s biting down on the Nihilist logo, which is an image right out of Iron Maiden’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album. This is definitely a cool looking cover, but I feel a little more originality could have been cooked up here. None the less, this is definitely a most welcomed album from a great band!
Starting off with the album title track, Nihilist rips into the thrash metal onslaught I’ve come to expect from them. The guitar riffs are both melodic and heavy, compliments of Joe Walker. This song is about some evil S.O.B. seeking revenge………and gets it. Sean Elg’s drum work is right on time with Loren Tipton’s bass notes. Sean’s playing is both fast and thunderous, which also shines through in his live performances as well. Loren is also the lead vocalist of Nihilist, and his sound can be compared to that of a mix between Slayer and old Rough Silk, with an added scream or two a-la Rob Halford. This is a GREAT opening song to a very anticipated album.
An old favorite of mine, “Destroyer” is one of Nihilist’s trademark songs. This newer version of the song gives it a little bit more life, with the addition of some Halford-like screams and killer guitar licks. Joe’s guitar solo absolutely kills, which is complimented by Sean’s fast drum work. I enjoyed the final verse that was added, which I don’t remember from the original version of the song. Once again, this thrash metal trio delivers a spiked, leather glove punch!
What can I say that I have not already hinted at here?!?? Joe Walker’s guitar work fucking owns on this song, and Sean Elg’s drumming continues to devastate!!! “American Plague” is another thrashing metal roller coaster ride. The pace is fast and steady, and Loren’s vocals are both aggressive and brutal. This song demands even more metal thrashing head banging!
Fast riffs and a high pitched scream open “The Assault”. A lot of palm muting keeps the rhythm going, and Sean’s drumming KILLS; it’s like he’s a machine. This song has a GREAT beat to it, complete with nice guitar leads and aggressive thrash vocals……All that in just over three minutes.
Yet another brutal metal assault is delivered from this California thrash trio. Joe’s guitar work is amazing: fast, melodic, and heavy. Sean continues his pounding drumming which has become a much-noticed trademark of this band. In fact, upon listening to this song in this point of the album, I have come to expect a few things from this band: melodic & heavy guitar riffs, aggressive & fast vocals, tight bass, and fast & pounding drums, ALL which have been executed so far with talent and style. Loren’s vocals are the perfect style and pace for this kind of music. I am hungry for more…………..
A foot stomping, head banging metal anthem is presented in “Devastator”. The guitar licks rule, and Loren’s vocals keep this mid-paced song going nicely. Again (sorry for repetition, but it’s true), Sean’s drumming is out of this world……by this point, I think his drum-set is on fire. The time change after the three-minute mark kills, as Joe’s guitar work gets faster and faster, ending in the same killer riff that started the song.
I have to be honest about this one: I LOVE this song, however I like the version heard on myspace much better. It’s rawer sounding. This version seems to have drowned out the drums, with play an important part in this song, particularly at the parts after the chorus. Also, after the first solo, the KILLER riff I remember hearing from the myspace version has been taken out (right before Loren sings “Nihilist Kills” a few times louder and louder). I must recap here, for I feel I have not done this song justice. Having stated my opinion between the two versions I’ve heard, I must commend this newer version of “Nihilist Kills”. This IS probably THE Nihilist anthem, and it is a brutal one. The drum work is hyper fast, the bass is tight, the guitar work is heavy and FAST, and the vocals rock!! THIS is what metal is about; THIS is why Nihilist will dominate; this song has it ALL!!!!!
Although musically Nihilist has NAILED this song, I didn’t really enjoy their version of Judas Priest’s “Freewheel Burning”. I did enjoy the way Joe spiced up the guitar work, and Loren’s aggressive touch worked in some places but not all. Covering Priest is not an easy task, and when a thrash metal band covers a Priest song, it looses part of its identity. If this were an original Nihilist song, then I would be praising it for it’s power and aggression; it is not an original Nihilist song, which is why it sounds a bit strange to me hearing a Judas Priest song with a thrash metal twist. Certainly, this was a cool idea, but I feel it just didn’t work. I feel this was a poor choice to cover a Judas Priest song; a more suitable cove for Nihilist would have been Testament or Slayer, where the thrash element already exists, and can be taken further, not reinvented.
Loren opens this song with some slow bass notes (which have been jazzed up a little bit as compared to the original demo version of this song), which are followed by some slow guitar riffs, compliments of Joe. Again, the guitar parts have been spiced up, as compared to the original demo version. The melody is taken to the next level and sped up. Lots of chugging and whaling riffs add a killer element to this song. The chorus is a brutal sing along: “Hessian….Mercenary!!! …..Back from hell…….to collect severed head!!!” Loren’s vocals are executed with raw power and anger…….it fucking rules. Sean’s drumming keeps the pace fast as hell, as he has done throughout this ENTIRE album. This is one of my favorite songs; one listen and you’ll be hooked.
The closing song for this album is “Vengeance Is Mine”………….I call this “The BIG m-f’er” because this has got to be the BEST song on this album. Hands down, this song has it ALL, and after hearing it you will have this incredible urge to kill something!!!! The opening riffs are strange and distorted, played slowly (I’m pretty sure it’s a bass). Then, some soloing chimes in, reminiscent of Iron Maiden. This leads to a fucking AWESOME guitar riff, complimented by pounding & beating bass/drum. The lyrics are dark and evil. “Seeking attack and revenge……Vengeance is MINE!!!” is part of the chorus. The guitar solo SHREDS, and the pace is steady & fast. The song ends with the same riff used in the beginning, which makes everything come full circle.
