Old Season - "Beyond the Black" (2017)
NOTE: Old Season's "Volume One" EP from 2005 was reviewed on this site; coverage is found under Record Reviews 2006.

"Irish Epic Metallers Old Season have forged their own unique sound from merging NWOBHM, Melodic, Prog and Power influences." - Source: Bandcamp
The aforementioned statement couldn't hold more true of Old Season. I am personally very happy to see this band is still making music, as I really enjoyed their 2005 debut EP, "Volume One". Twelve years later sees their next release, "Beyond the Black". With so much time between releases, I cannot help but ponder why it took so long for this band to put out new music, and how they have evolved since "Volume One". This review will hopefully shed some light on the latter of the two.

Opening track "A New Dawn" already demonstrates a better production job in the clarity & crispness of the recording. Soaring vocals a-la Dream Theatre/Symphony X are accompanied by harmonized guitar riffs a-la Maiden/Savatage. There are hints of Prog Metal, as some keyboard & orchestra compliment the drum & heavier guitar parts between guitar riffs. John Bonham, who replaced Frank Brennan as vocalist, fits Old Season well as they forge forward with this album of new material.

"Scavenger" holds elements of the many NWOTHM bands, harnessing the weight of a big sing-along chorus and melodic riffs. Canada's Cauldron comes to mind as I listen to this track. Packed with galloping drum & guitar, this track continues to set a powerful pace. "Chosen" brings the sound back to Old Season's Doom influences, as elements of Candlemass can be heard.

Further into the album, tracks such as "Elegy", and "Journeyman", both explore the Prog Metal influence of the band (clocking in at an average of eight minutes each), all incorporating elements of Savatage. "Elegy" contains many impressive guitar leads; "Journeyman" has a slow build up from keyboard/acoustic to a riff-filled composition demonstrating the many musical talents of this band. The bombastic "Rivers of Cepha" reminds me of something I would hear on later albums from NY's Gothic Knights (do your research on that one if you're not in the know). I must admit, I struggle at times to maintain attention to a song when it runs over the five or six minute mark.

Rounding out the album, "The Void" holds a smorgasbord of variety in its incorporated styles. Just listen to it...it is not too much or too little. "Nevermore" closes the album out with all the aforementioned elements, style, and influence which this band executes so well.

After over a decade of silence from Old Season, "Beyond the Black" reminds the listener of how much talent & influence a single band can possess. Having crafted their own sound on top of their incredible range of influence, this band leaves me excited to hear what they have in their pipeline.

Solicitor - "Spectral Devastation" (2020)
There are many NWOTHM (that's New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal) bands circulating currently. Many, as I have noticed, are coming out of Sweden. This does not dismiss the talent seen from the United States, as bands like Night Demon, Eternal Champion, and Visigoth (to name just a few) provide similar flavor & talent as seen in the many European bands under this newish genre. Solicitor is no exception, hailing from Seattle, Washington.

Spectral Devastation has an almost Death Metal styled album art, with its dark colors & detailed shading depicting zombies gathered near a witch or sorceress. Their chiseled block-logo, complete with umlauts, hints towards the 80's bands from which they draw their influences & style from. A lot of early Iron Maiden/NWOBHM can be heard in their sound, as the harmonized guitar riffs take the listener back to 1981! I'm thinking Maiden's Killers album, as many riffs really speak to that album's style. Add in their Speed Metal elements of chugging, palm-muted power chords and you have a great idea of what this band is delivering.

Opening track "Blood Revelations" is a an impressive Speed/Thrash Metal start to what will shape up to be a very well rounded album. Soaring vocals with added grit in the right places, tons & tons of riffs, fast drum - it's all here.

Five tracks in, "Night Vision" represents a gritty & melodic, fast paced "heavy metal war cry", as I'm calling it. This track is likely AMAZING live, provoking energy & much thrashing from Solicitor's audience. The drums are fast & smashing; the guitar solo towards the end of this track kicks ass.

"Spectres of War" continues in the same fashion and just seemed to me like another stand-out track.

Let's just say that if you took the speed & riffs of Agent Steel, the harmonized guitars of Maiden & Priest, and add in some Slayer - you will have an idea of Solicitor's sound. Hats off to guitarists Matthew Vogan & Patrick Fry, as well as bassist Damon Cleary and drummer Johann Waymire. Vocalist Amy Lee Carlson is best described as the result of Doro/Warlock meets early Testament. Check this band out!!!

Grave Digger - "Fields of Blood" (2020)
GRAVEDIGGER returns to the helm with their latest offereing here. Let's check it out...

Fields of Blood, the latest effort from Germany's metal stalwarts Grave Digger, hold no surprises in its content. Opening track, "The Clansman's Journey" is a bagpipe dominate ear-piercer. My opinion here - I've never enjoyed bagpipes, in any shape or form. Incorporating them into a metal album does not make sense to me. Again - all my opinion here. I know a LOT of Grave Digger fans (and fans of other bands too) who would drop at the sight of that sentence. Regardless, the opener sets an atmospheric tone of the album's subject matter - Scottish War. "All for the Kingdom" has those familiar GD heavy guitar moments with strong power chords. "Lions of the Sea" has a huge chorus, which I can envision a controlled crowd sing along from vocalist Chris."Freedom" has some palm-muted riffing, which leads to a fast chugging guitar with pounding drum. This song could possible lead any line of warriors into battle with its inspiring lyrics: "Never Give Up...Never Retreat. Never Give Up...What You Believe", for example. Clearly, I really enjoyed this one!

"Heart of Scotland" - again, the bagpipes!!! The guitar riff is cool, which goes along with a battle-type drum. "Fields of Blood" slows things down a bit, as we get a clean vocal execution accompanied by some beautiful acoustic guitar. Turns out this song is a beautiful, dark gothic duet with an unknown (to me) female vocalist. Of course the title track is epic - IT SHOULD BE! You'll all eat this one up!

Enough of the track-by-track...you get it! In 1996 we had "Tunes of War" and 2010 saw "The Clans Will Rise Again". Go complete the circle with 2020's "Fields of Blood". Grave Digger shows no signs of slowing down, as they continuously demonstrate their capability to remain in prime condition in both musical & vocal execution, all blanketed by their trademark bombastic/epic overtones.

Hellripper - "Black Arts & Alchemy EP" (2019)
HELLRIPPER can be described as a Classic old-school Speed/Death/Thrash band. Influences shine through, while its own identity is maintained. For fans of Venom, Witchery, Exciter, etc. The mastermind behind the music is James McBain, hailing from the Scottish Highlands. He has a live touring band, which has opened & toured with notable talent such as MIDNIGHT & ANGEL SWORD. Here's an overview of the album...

"All Hail The Goat" wastes no time going for the juggular with its fast & heavy opening. The riffing is very reminiscent of Exciter's "Long Live the Loud", fused with a vocal style similar to Witchery's "Restless & Dead" meets Venom's "Black Metal". It's a three minute speed attack, equipped with lots of heaviness.
"Decrepit Christ" continues the fast & heavy assault. There are even some later-developed NWOBHM influences in the guitar solos, which are executed with greater speed. This prevails in the opening riffs to "Black Arts & Alchemy". The chugging palm-muted beginnings which lead into harmonized guitar is sheer metal perfection. This song has some serious head-banging chugging riffing & smashing drum throughout its three minute short stay. "Headless Angels" closes out this EP with continued Venom/Witchery/Exciter/etc. influence. There's even a nice Slayer-esque yell/scream towards the end of the song, which I am curious to hear more of!
James McBain's HELLRIPPER MUST be heard, as his style does hold its own while still paying homage to his many influences. This musician has a lot of talent & delivers! Check him out on Bandcamp.

Cirith Ungol - "Forever Black" (2020)
Cirith Ungol stepped out of a cryogenic frozen chamber from the 1980's & picked right up where they left off! This band still has the evident capabilities in vocal & musicianship execution. I cannot stop listening to this album from start to finish! Even the album artwork remains consistent with their roots!!!! I also had the pleasure of seeing them in Baltimore, MD a few years ago, and they crushed it live as well. HAIL CIRITH UNGOL!!!! Here's an overview of the album...

"The Call" is a nice atmospheric intro, which leads into "Legions Arise". This seems to be the "We've RETURNED" anthem of the band, and it couldn't be more true. Tim Baker's screaching vocals squash any doubt of a return to 1980's glory, as his passion in singing "LEGIONS ARISE" is the beacon to summon back the band's LEGIONS to ARISE from a many years void without this band. The song is poetic in ways, and spares no time in its demonstration of Cirith Ungol's known sound.

"The Frost Monstreme" continues in the same fashion, with its chugging guitar, palm-muted riffing, and smashing drum (cheers to drummer Robert Garven). "The Fire Divine" reminds me of "Go It Alone", with its upbeat tempo & sing-along chorus."Stormbringer" highlight's Tim's clean vocals in the first moments of the song, accompanied by more amazing guitar riffs, courtesy of Jim "Jimmy" Barraza & Greg Lindstrom. This song is yet another example of this band's capability to fuse their signature style of Doom Metal & Traditional Metal.

"Fractus Promissum" is another head-banging anthem with fuzzt whah guitar & heavy riffing. "Nightmare" & "Before Tomorrow" continue with fast paced metal injections of heavy riffing & yet more big sing-along choruses.

"Forever Black" closes out the album in its Doom Metal glory. Check out the way the bass guitar really is emphasized in all the right places in this song! Kudos to bassist Jarvis Leatherby!

FOREVER BLACK has made a statement - CIRITH UNGOL has returned with style. They have picked up gloriously where they left off. Yes, they have returned by way of FROST & FIRE.

JULY 25, 2021:

NEWS FROM IRON MAIDEN / NEW ALBUM
From ironmaiden.com:

We are thrilled to announce the release of IRON MAIDEN s 17th studio album Senjutsu on September 3rd through Parlophone Records (BMG in the USA). It was recorded in Paris with longstanding producer Kevin Shirley and co-produced by Steve Harris.

For Senjutsu loosely translated as tactics & strategy , the band once again enlisted the services of Mark Wilkinson to create the spectacular Samurai themed cover artwork, based on an idea by Steve Harris. And with a running time of a little under 82 minutes, Senjutsu, like their previous record The Book Of Souls, will be a double CD album/triple vinyl album.

Steve says "We chose to record at Guillaume Tell Studio in France again as the place has such a relaxed vibe. The setup there is perfect for our needs; the building used to be a cinema and has a really high ceiling so there s a great acoustic sound. We recorded this album in the same way we did The Book Of Souls in that we d write a song, rehearse it and then put it down together straight away while it was all fresh in our minds. There s some very complex songs on this album which took a lot of hard work to get them exactly as we wanted them to sound, so the process was at times very challenging, but Kevin is great at capturing the essence of the band and I think it was worth the effort! I m very proud of the result and can t wait for fans to hear it."

Bruce Dickinson continues, "We re all really excited about this album. We recorded it back in early 2019 during a break in the Legacy tour so we could maximize our touring yet still have a long set up period before release to prepare great album art and something special as a video. Of course the pandemic delayed things more - so much for the best laid plans or should that be strategies !? The songs are very varied, and some of them are quite long. There s also one or two songs which sound pretty different to our usual style, and I think Maiden fans will be surprised - in a good way, I hope!"

The full tracklisting is:

1. Senjutsu (Smith/Harris) 8:20
2. Stratego (Gers/Harris) 4:59
3. The Writing On The Wall (Smith/Dickinson) 6:13
4. Lost In A Lost World (Harris) 9:31
Days Of Future Past (Smith/Dickinson) 4:03
6. The Time Machine (Gers/Harris) 7:09
7. Darkest Hour (Smith/Dickinson) 7:20
8. Death Of The Celts (Harris) 10:20
9. The Parchment (Harris) 12:39
10. Hell On Earth (Harris) 11:19
